So I was out and about in the early hours, so I decided to queue for an iPhone on my way home.

I got my first choice white/silver phone and thought I would post up some first impressions.

Firstly, it is one classy phone, it is as well built as any phone I have ever had and the aluminium and glass finish with the one shiny edge really just look excellent.

The finish and build compared to the SGS3 I had (with its cheap smooth plastic and creaky battery cover) is like comparing a Jag to one of those Daewoo Chevrolets, build quality wise, there is a gulf between them. The 2 tone look is really attractive as well. Apple have done an excellent job on build quality and materials on this phone.

I really like the new connector, it's so simple to use, it slots in either way without fuss, it can literally be plugged in in total darkness (or wearing a blindfold if you're into that sort of thing ;)).

I don't know if data transfer is supposed to be any quicker compared to the old connector, but it transferred my music on far quicker than I'm used to with my iPhone 4.

Signal is improved, not just that it shows more bars, but in an area of poor coverage (where both the iPhone 4 and SGS3 used to struggle and drop out) the iPhone 5 held a nice clear call. Earpiece is louder and clearer.

When I first removed the phone from its box I had a thought of "there is no battery in this phone" as its metal and glass but so light, really noticeably lighter in the hand then the 4.

For anyone worrying about the whole nano sim thing, don't, I cut my micro sim down standing in the car park of the Apple store and it worked perfectly, it really was simple. I decided to do it while I was still there as I would have just gone back into the shopping centre and bought a nanosim as the phone shops got stock in yesterday in advance of the phones release.

How much did you pay and from which country?
Network unlocked??

Sorry folks :( but there have to be some advantages to putting up with the cold ;)).

Yes, bought sim free from Apple, cost ÂŁ529 (but sold my SGS3 upgrade for ÂŁ320 and my iPhone 4 is going for ÂŁ250 in the next few days).

Much prefer buying sim free, last time I was back in SA I just sourced a local sim and carried on with my phone as usual.

How's the screen. Seeing that is an retina display and I've not seen anyone saying anything about it?

The screen is an improvement, it's about as sharp as the 4, but the colour and clarity are deeper. As an example, my background behind the icons is an accidental photo of a blue blanket, completely out of focus, on the 4 it has s slightly washed out look where it gets lighter in colour, on the 5 the blue is much richer and smoother (without the OT look when you choose "Dynamic" on the Galaxy).

I guess they didn't offer you a buy-1-get-1-free on this little beauty:

I have one, almost exactly the same ;)

But amazingly, the turn by turn part of the new maps is really good, you ask Siri to navigate somewhere and it is seamless into the navigation (and actually accurate and smooth, perhaps that's the part of Apple Maps that TomTom helped with).

You mean the Maps issue is being blown out of proportion? I am shocked and scandalized that anybody would exaggerate any defect of Apple's product, truly.

I'm looking forward to October when SA gets turn by turn but I think I'll probably still rely on my tomtom app which doesn't require a data connection. Still, for those who didn't have a navigation app it's a big improvement over the google driven maps we previously had. Maybe google will bring turn by turn to iOS if they make an app.
