My new shiny Audi does exactly the same as my 2 year old one. Basically the same, but it’s not.

I’m getting the X purely for the screen estate. iPhone 7/8 plus is a bleedy brick

Just hope that whatever apps you use have been updated to support the screen.

Getting to the point now where I want to uninstall the ones that haven't updated yet, the black bars at the top/bottom are crap.

You also pick up little issues in the UI that isn't Apple like - in normal usage the cellular and wifi bars are at the top right corner. However when you swipe down for control center these bars then jump to the left side like non-X phones.

Also, the phone is still USB2.0. You know how long it takes to back up 4K/60fps videos over usb 2.0? Over night isn't long enough.

So if I buy an unlocked version from an Apple Store in USA, will I get the A1865 version? And will it work here?

The USA has two models as two of their networks (sprint and Verizon) still use CDMA bands. But both phones support the same gsm/lte bands so they will function exactly the same everywhere else in the world.

You can get any phone in the USA without issue.

Can you take a screenshot of an app or 2 that shows the black bars?

A trick I found to make it a little more tolerable is to have a full black background wallpaper. When the app loads, because everything was black already, it just seems normal - like a black bezeled phone. A colorful wallpaper make you immediately realize the lost screen estate as you then have the black bars appear out of nowhere.

As I mentioned before IOS 11 is a UX nightmare.
In the app switcher the unoptimized apps have grey bars at the top and bottom, which turn black when you click on the app.
