iPhone and iPod touch- What happens now?

So the iPhone 5 is rumored to be getting a taller 4" screen breaking away from the 3,5" that has been standard since 2007. It is going to have a new aspect ratio and resolution as well as a bigger form factor. Now the iPod touch currently has the same screen as the iPhone, will it go to the bigger size? If so it becomes a bit of a nuisance as an MP3 player, if not are Apple willing to fragment their line? I doubt that. The touch is a great product, a number of people use it as their MP3 player and have other phones such as BB's and Droids. Many people I know have gotten iPhones after enjoying using their Touch for pretty much everything else.

I did the maths a while ago, it is on another thread here, but Apple could have retained the current aspect ratio with about a 5mm increase in width and 10mm increase in height with a roughly 1110X730 res.

My bet is as follow:
1. Apple is going larger for greater battery space to cater for greater resource demands of new tech (same trend with Android); larger screen size in this case would be a consequential benefit.
2. iPod Touch most likely be replaced by 7" iPad... (iPod, music only / limited function devices no longer make sense... sales decline trend is indicative of this)
3. Apple will retain lower end iPod devices for those requiring portability e.g. Running with iPod, ...

Let's all just be patient. It was only a year ago that all the usual rumour mongers swore that Apple would be coming out with a smaller iPhone ...

I highly doubt Apple is going to change the form factor of the iPhone, let alone drop the iPod Touch.

If the screen is bigger it will be using what is currently unused space on the iPhone face.

Im actually in the market for a 32GB iPod Touch for the car. Would you guys recommend waiting for the 5th gen or should I just get it now? If they do announce a new iPod Touch in September, how long will it be till it hits our shores?

Unlike the phones and the pads, ipods don't require delicate negotiations with the cellcos. So they generally show up in the first container after the announcement. Call it a month afterwards.

Nobody outside Cupertino knows if the iPod Touch will get an upgrade, and if so, what it will be. So nobody can really advise you whether to buy now or wait. Best bet: wait till the announcement, and if you don't like what they announce, run to the nearest store and buy the old model.

The iPod Touch is for music only? Aw gee, I guess that means I'm not responding to your post on it right now. Silly me.

I've wished for a long time that Apple would give the Touch 3G as with the iPad that cannot be used as phone. That will make it a fantastic device to own, ie very small iPad. I think Apple is concerned about the implications this would have for iPhone sales. I also suspect the new iPad 7" will replace the Touch. Touch has always been a favourite of mine .. but 3G would be WOW!
