I use nPlayer on my iPhone for watching videos. Normally upload to iCloud, download to files and watch in nPlayer.

But something that I've noticed recently, is if I open an MP4 it plays automatically in whatever app Apple use for video playback and it has a 'clip' function. So playing around I made a clip, but when it 'saves', it appears not to save. Well if it does I can't find it. Anyone have any idea what's going on and do you only access this video playback app with no name when playing certain video files? (it doesn't work for the others I have saved at the moment which are also H265 but different codec).

Yeah, it was something and nothing. nPlayer works great but I was surprised after so many years with an iPhone seeing it has a built in video player with a clip function and just wondered about it.

I’m sure if it already lives in files then you can clip it.

Possibly on a read-only share which is why it’s not working to save?

Figured it out.

It relies on the app “Clips” having been installed and also having been opened at least once.

I had it installed but had the same result as you it just went nowhere.

After opening “Clips” and running through the initial prompts it now saves.

Ah, okay, that makes sense. I’ve never even opened Clips and is one of those apps that I uninstall immediately. But I’ll install it and play around a bit now. Thanks.

Yeah forgot all about it as I maybe opened it once when it came out.

The word just triggered in my brain when you said it.

Oddly I expected it to put the clip inside the app but it didn’t do that either, which tells me it just uses that in the background to do the work.

Could actually have been more useful if it simply saved it to the app. As it stands I have no idea what the point of the app is.

Well I downloaded clips, played around with it turned me into an octopus, saved a clip to my photos. Went to the mp4 I wanted to save a clip from and it’s the same issue. Asks to save but saves nowhere. Looking at it now it looks like the save button is a slightly less blue colour than the cancel button underneath. Have you tried with an MP4 in files or just using the clips app?

Meh, but was just curious. No biggy. There must be better ways to spend a day off

Pretty sure it was MP4, but remember that’s just a container not necessarily the underlying codec.

I didn’t use the Clips app at all.

But let me fiddle again.

Works for me every time.

Both the movies I have are h265 bit different codecs. hvc 1 plays generically, hev 1 doesn’t. That one only plays in nPlayer.

Interesting. I’m in the vets waiting room so not able to study that properly. But do you make the clip, press done and then press save and it asks you where to?

Doesn’t ever ask me where to, just saves it in the same folder where the original lives.

Works both locally and in iCloud.

Could it he something to do with being mobile and iCloud maybe not having data access? Surely that would save it in cache and upload later.

I was on Wi-Fi at home the whole time until now.

But the file I’m using was on iCloud which I downloaded to my phone. Pretty weird. I’ll keep playing and see what’s cooking.

Necroing an old thread but its about iPhone video recording.

Thinking of getting a spare iPhone to record my tennis matches as they have better video and should be cheaper than a GoPro.

Which iPhones do you think would proper the best bang for buck recording quality?
