So I got a new iPhone 4s 16Gb from CellC on Wednesday (8/7/2012) last week. I already have a iPhone 4 32Gb. So the 4s is still in its box.

I put the CellC sim into the 4 and manually set the Internet/MMS/Tether options as I wasn't near my mac at the time to do it through iTunes. So this morning I thought I'd backup my phone so on connecting it to iTunes I get a pop up to say my carrier had changed would I like to update, so I clicked update, big mistake as now the tether settings have disappeared.

Speaking to the CellC helpdesk is like hitting my head on a wall. Clearly there is a problem with the update CellC is pushing through iTunes but the helpdesk keeps on saying there is a problem with my internet connection.

Is there anyway to restore the tether settings manually. I was thinking of going to buy a MTN pay as you go and seeing if updating the settings through mtn would restore them.

iOS version 5.1.1

I am having exactly the same problem. What is causing this? I put a vodacom sim back in my phone and it temporarily fixed the issue. But as soon as I modify the APN, i lose the tether options again. How do you fix this?

I have the Ipad 3 on Vodacom and I do not have the tethering option. What are your APN settings?

So this is the solution I got from CellC

Good afternoon, we have received your query regarding the tethering option disappearing.

Reason : cell c carrier settings update does not contain tether option, therefore handset does not display option.

Solution : perform a carrier settings update for possibly Vodacom or MTN. thereafter restart the Iphone, and manually edit the carrier settings.

The Carrier Settings are as follows >

Internet APN : internet

MMS APN : mms
MMSC : http://mms.cmobile.co.za
MMS Proxy : 196.031.116.250:8080
MMS Max message size : 307200

Internet tethering APN : internet

fields that are not specified , you may leave empty eg (username, password)

So now my contract with CellC isn't even a week old, should I tell them to port my number back to MTN (where tethering works) and they can stick their iphone ......

thats ridiculous. so to make tethering work, you have to insert a sim card from a competitor network. absurd!

Hmm, I'll tweet this to cellc support on twitter they need to update their carrier profile...
