So like everyone, since my iPhone got mugged, and I had turned off my mobile data for Find My iPhone, I can't track it, right?

And whosoever uses it and connects to WiFi, it will show up, yeah?

Help.

Your iphone should not be out alone after dark. Any phone walking down a dark ally at night is at risk. You should have told it that it was not allowed out.

Did you turn off your " Find my Iphone" ?

If you turned off "Find my Iphone", you are buggered. If its still turned on, you can log into https://www.apple.com/support/icloud/find-my-device/ and lock the device,(will happen as soon as any data connection is made) if you had at least IOS 7.1.2 installed there is nothing they can do to bypass it..
I doubt you will get your iphone back, but good luck. perhaps put a reward message on the phone.

Yeah thanks, L. I've been tracking it but it's still offline. I will be at the PS station later to report it stolen.

I say get hold of your local sangoma and tell him what happened. He can turn the thieves into rats and they will bring your phone back to you. Yes, it is true I am not being funny, I read an article in the Daily Sun about this happening.

the phone will still be able to reveal it's location via wifi when / if it connects to any available network.

dont be in too much of a rush to lock it or have it blacklisted, as soon as you do that, any prospect of tracking or locating it is gone.
change your apple id password, this will prevent the thief from disabling 'find my iphone" from the handset.
block the sim - not the handset.

maybe (with any luck) you are dealing with a dumb common thief, if that is the case, they will probably turn it on and off a few times to see if it is locked or blacklisted.
when they see no signal, chances are they will insert a new sim card - and then see a signal & think they have got lucky, especially if the phone has remained on for some time.

all of this is a big big maybe

I'd wipe that sucker as soon as possible - my data is worth more than the phone. Send the wipe command and hope it somehow gets through - it will have to connect to an open wifi point if you've got a passcode on it so keep your fingers crossed.

Agreed. My iPhone was stolen recently and when my friend and I tested the location tracker to find HIS phone, it wasn't accurate at all. Showed he was in a different location while he was sitting right next to me. That's when I decided to just erase my data from my lost phone. My info was more important to me than the phone.

P.S Police didn't help at all. All I could do was blacklist the phone at Vodacom.

If "Find my iPhone" was turned on, and a Key lock was setup, it will be impossible for them to extract any data from your phone. Its basically a brick, unless of course they have friends in the USA, who works for apple....
So i wont be to bothered about my personal info. Look at Oscar's phone, our top forensic's could not get anything, what is a common street criminal going to do.
If you had a Samsung or any other phone, then yes, the "Wipe" command will come at the speed of light.

Thank you for that information - hopefully I won't need to track a lost iPhone again, but it's definitely useful info :)
