One of my international colleagues is coming to SA for 12 weeks next year.

I am contemplating asking him to bring me an iPhone4 and iPad with. Will it still work here?

Of course there is a warranty issues if the need arises, but I'm sure it can be worked out.

as long as the firmware is not 02.10.04(iphone 4) and its unlocked it should work...I'm using mine as an ipod atm

The phone will not work here if it's a US iPhone, as they are locked to the AT&T network. To use it here you will have to jailbreak (not 100% sure of the terminology?) it, which you might not want to do, as that will invalidate any warranty you might have.

As far as I know, the 3G iPads will work here.

Rather get an iPad, it's irritating to have an iPhone since they are locked to AT&T in the US.

iPads are unlocked.

Quick revival of this thread! I'm in the US at the moment and am wanting to get an iPad. Will the 3G on the iPad work back in SA? My blackberry bold (9700) works on EDGE over here in the US, but not on 3G (AT&T) and so I'm concerned that the iPad will suffer from the same problem when back in SA?
Also, I understand that Cell C has is using the 900Mhz spectrum - will the iPad work on this?

Nick

No current iPad supports 900MHz UMTS, so they will not work with Cell C.

Apart from that they should work fine if they are not locked.

BTW the iPhone 4 supports 900MHz UMTS (but the 3 does not).

I got my iPad in the US and it works fine with Vodacom data contract.
