Hi Esteemed Forumites, I need to get of those above, and must admit, these gadgets are way above my (Grandpa) knowledge. We dont have Telkom lines in our area & my son desperately needs to re-search on the internet. what would be the best? I currently have a BlackBerry & for my purposes it is ok, but too small for him; in essence his main requirements would be; 10 - 12" screen/lcd, qwerty k/b to type assignments & internet connectivity (same or nearabouts as BB would be fine, mine R169 pm, BIS). IMHO, a 12" BB would be suitable, but you dont get, so thats out off it! Email, sms, phone is optional as he has cell. will be online if more details required, thanks in advance!

If his phone can tether (Share 3G via Wifi) look at the Eee Pad Transformer.

If he needs 3G on the device, the 3G ones will only be available in August.
 
For assignments a netbook with a 3G connection/contract running Windows7 is still best.
 
There are Gigabyte netbooks going for under R2500. Students need Windows and MS Office and be able to print with ease.

If you get a Netbook/laptop look for the Cell C prepaid option

12 months of 2 gig a month for R1499 once off or if he needs 5 gig, R2999 once off

You can also look at the MTN and Vodacom 2 Gig contracts as they the same price, I would recommend prepaid if you dont want to be hit with huge data costs at the end of the month.
 
For 3G make very very sure of reception/coverage. I, for example, cannot use the Cell C deal as I have zero Cell C data coverage despite living in an area that shows coverage on their map.
 
hi BV, you right, Cell C has not had good coverage in our area - had a cell c contract about 2 years ago, lots of dropped calls, delayed sms's etc! Will have to look at VC unfortunately!
 
Sorry, am using a BB, what is the device on Kalahari about? Can only see at office tomorrow?

Netbook or laptop will be a better option than a tablet PC. Also check the coverage on the websites of the Cell providers. Cell C has expanded their coverage a lot over the past 2 years so you might have better coverage now
 
For a student a laptop will be best, some crazy prices lately can get a good brand dual core, 3gb ram, 500gb hdd etc for less than R4k. Netbooks also great but are a bit slower and no DVD drive.

The tablets etc all very fun but I will not replace my laptop with one of them for a LONG time.
