So, I have had my iPhone and Mac for almost a year, really like my iPhone, easy to use (accept when transferring music, e-books, audio books or almost anything)
Coming from Android I am really starting to regret it, there are no free room as with android, I like my third party OS, and easy applet writing. Without bricking the pone.

The question for long term Apple users how do you deal with this lack in user friendliness (and most important expendable memory) ?

Add them via iTunes and sync. eBooks if they in PDF email.

Just get iMazing...all transfer issues solved... :)

Doesn't that kind of stuff normally come at a cost, breaks some iOS functionality/icloud backup etc?

Small price to pay for the convenience, and no issues with backups to iCloud or any functionality.

if you have an iphone and mac your files should be syncing across devices. are you using itunes.

if i had a mac it would close the loop for me but there is an icloud app as well for pc. but my stuff across my devices so i dont need.

why did you make the switch if you have those requirements? jailbreak would be the only option if you want that control.

With Apple you need to embrace the whole eco-system and their services. Music doesn't bother me, because I use Apple Music, my photos sync to my iPad and Mac via iCloud. I can't remember the last time I plugged my phone into any computer.

No functionality lost using iMazing at all. You can also look at iFunbox and its free.

Like akescpt said, you could try jailbreaking and see if that suits you better... It's kinda like flashing a ROM on an Android phone. Top tip: iClarified.com for tutorials and downloads. Never really trusted any other site back in the day when I used to jailbreak.

That all said, I'm really struggling to figure out why syncing books, audiobooks, movies, shows or whatever with iTunes is a drag. If you use iCloud and WiFi sync your phone, you never have to think about it... ever.

I have never felt the need to transfer music. If I want to listen to it, it's on my iPhone or iPad. My iPhone is always on me and I can play through my Bose speaker if I want to. Or through my cars system. As for files etc, I use office365 and my docs are available through one drive on any device and my pc or MacBook. I don't have a space problem. When I upgrade I buy the iPhone with max space. I still have an iPhone 5s and have no plans to upgrade. I will only upgrade when I can't install the latest iOS on it and that's mainly for security reasons. Also why I will never jailbreak my iphone.
