You'll have to ask Google that question - hopefully TomTom will release an iPhone version of their navigation software sometime soon.

Firstly it is google maps, not iphone maps. The iphone has no mapping software as this would mean that apple makes a little less profit on it.

The reason why the maps are not detailed is because google does not have detailed maps for south africa. If you wanted detailed maps for south africa you should have gotten a phone that comes with Nokia Maps (yes, they actually made navigation software and maps). You can then download maps onto the phone so that you do not need network coverage when navigating.

If you do not like Nokia Maps you can also load Garmin onto the phone (works on windows mobile as well) and they have some of the best maps in the world.

But not all hope is lost, at the end of the year there will be a new version of the iphone that has all the current problems fixed, think of it as the 3rd generation iphone if you like. It is called the 5800 and made by a Finnish company called Nokia :p

Here is a brief comparison of the GPS software I have tried out :
This is what Google maps look like for Stellenbosch :
picture.php

Some things to consider :
1 It is very inaccurate
2 A lot of streets are missing
3 All the data is pulled over the network
4 It has no voice navigation
5 Routing is limited (partially due to missing roads)

This is what Nokia Maps looks like for Stellenbosch :

Some things to consider :
1 It has a lot of details of points of interests AND roads
2 All map data can be loaded onto the memory card
3 It has voice navigation (2years free when you buy through vodacom).
4 Very capable routing, even has Afrikaans language file.

This is what Garmin XT looks like for Stellenbosch :

Some things to consider :
1 It does not get more detailed than this
2 Routing and voice guidance is EXCELLENT
3 This is the industry leading GPS and it is that for a reason.
