iPhone Newby Question

Good Morning All

Firstly, I am all new to using the iPhone.
What I would like to know or find out is whether if I don't have or take a data bundle with my iPhone and connect to my home wireless Internet connection, if I will still pay or occur data costs at the end of the month when I make use or connect to the Internet and download /browse ?

Any advice will be greately appreciated.
 
If you are connected to the WiFi, the iPhone will automatically use the WiFi for any data usage. It will not come off of your cell phone bil.. The moment your WiFi is turned off or you disconnect from the WiFi, it will use your airtime/data bundle.

Even if there is a problem with your WiFi, it will NOT automatically revert to your airtime/data bundle, but you will have to turn WiFi off or disconnect from the network.

Rule of thumb: If you see the WiFi icon on top in the status bar, it will not use your airtime/data bundle.

Does it still use wifi when the phone is locked?
I think i read/heard somewhere that it doesn't... could be wrong, or most probably is :p

Well for a certain amount of time yes, and then it gets turned off to save battery which makes sense. There are Cydia tweaks you can download which keep the WiFi on after this "standby time", but they drain your battery as you can imagine.
 
Are you sure it turns off. It's like BT - stays on till you turn it off.

Try it out for yourself. After 10 mins or so after the phone has been locked (i havent timed exactly), press the home button and you'll see it on EDGE or 3G, and then quickly change back to your WiFi.

I did. It stays connected. I have cellular data turned off at home and everything comes through when locked.
