Hi
Shop assistant from Vodacom told me that i could not put my MTN sim card into the iPhone as they are only set for vodacom and anyway there are a lot of extras that are only designed for Vodacom and the iPhone.
Is he talking Bull as i don't wanna buy and be left with something i cant use, and then be forced to sell it to the vultures on the classifieds........LOL
Regards
Kienah

under correction, but from experience with activating 2 iphones and using them briefly.

Iphone is not network locked locally (local stock that is) - activated it via itunes using both a vodacom sim and and then subsequently replaced it with and MTN sim and on the 2nd occassion used an mtn sim.

thx for the heads up, so as usual, the assistants think they are rocket scientists and hope bull**** baffles brains!!

Dude dont listen to the ppl in Vodacom shops, they have no idea how they got dressed in the morning (sorry if i have offended any1, but from my experience in the last couple of months, wow is all i can say)

I was once fscked around by the security guy at a vodacom shop trying to tell me what i should be going, I eventually got so peeved off i told him to "f*@% off" as I knew he was talking bull ****, felt bit bad afterwards.... but any way.....

He does have a point. The iPhone was tested on the Vodacom network and certain packages are customised to the phone and certain applications.
Also make sure your warranty doesnt get void should you use another sim.

I have been using my iPhone 3G on MTN without any hassles since the day after the launch in South Africa!

I have 2 friends of mine that are using their iPhone on the MTN network without ANY problems...

@JK8 - They'll never know if another sim card has been used.

They will.

Vodacom is able to log which IMEI numbers are logged onto the network. If you log into Vodacom4me, you can even see the last 4 phones you've used on your simcard. It's as simple as them entereing the IMEI number into their computer for them to see if the phone has been active on the vodacom network in the past 90 days.

I am aware of that.

BUT Vodacom won't know if a MTN sim card was used. They'll only know if a Vodacom Sim Card has been used. MTN though, will log that IMEI on their network.. And I don't think it stipulates anywhere that if a different sim card is used it will void the warranty. How bizarre is that!?

Yea. Using an MTN Simcard doesn't invalidate the warranty. The vodacom warranty states that the phone must have been active on the vodacom network within the past 90 days. So, if you are always only using MTN - by virtue of not logging onto the vodacom network, your warranty will be invalidated!

I figure if you stick a vodacom simcard in once every 3 months - you have your warranty.

I use to work in cellphone retail
MTN rep told me it's illegal for Service Providers to lock a phone to a network.
Only the 2yr warranty crap falls away and you get the 1yr manufacturer warranty. Dunno if this is true but this is what the MTN guy said.

Lol do you think a SP will invest Billions into a network and not have access to something so basic?
They will know, I suggest you use your Voda sim for atleast 3hours every 30 - 60 days in the iPhone.
Regarding the warranty, im not what it says, but read it properly just to make sure.

So then what is the final outcome, can you use an MTN sim in a "Vodacom" phone without invalidating your warranty??

It cannot invalidate the warranty, as that = locking the phone to a specific network. The only thing that can happen is that MTN tells you that they do not support the iphone when you have some issues, but from my experience (and countless of phone calls to mtn), they actually "support" the iphone in a non formal way.

I got my iphone in january (have both an vodacom and mtn contract, the vodacom is for the little missus, and she did not want the phone), and immediately put it over to the MTN network, works like a charm

I spoke to Nokia and Samsung, it seems they don't care what network you use, just bring the phone in to them for repair under warranty :)
