I have a question regarding the iPhone contracts with vodacom.

Will it be possible for me to buy an iPhone cash and then just take out a vodacom contract of my choice, or even vodacom prepaid?

reason I'm asking is the vodacom iPhone contracts are ridiculously expensive

iPhone pricing is strictly controlled so go to a reputable Vodacom outlet. Just remember some store may charge more so do your home work first. Take out a Vodacom 4u contract and have the iPhone APN activated and then just pay for your calls.
