Hi all and thank you for your help.

I'm writing on behalf of my dad; iPhone 4.

He was in Botswana on a trip last week and I think he wanted to run the iOS6 update; I think so. well, something that should have happened did not happen or the other way around. Since then, the phone is OFF. I have connected it with a cable while iTunes is running, and iTunes did not detect the phone. While it is connected, the Apple appears and then disappear. I have connected it to my own charger and the best that happens then is the slider appears to run the iOS 6 installation after which it shows that I must connect it to iTunes.

Is there a way I can save the phone without taking it to a shop?

Regards,
Deon

I hope he was connected to Wifi when doing the upgrade. I would suggest looking into how to make the phone go into recovery mode (a sequence of holding in buttons etc) it essentially resets the phone and when you plug it into iTunes it tells you the phone needs to be restored and does just that.

Thanx for the reply. No, unfortunately he was not connected to Wifi.
I have already tried to run in recovery mode, but cannot get access. I cannot even switch it off.

Eish he's gonna have some bill to come home to. If you hold the big button and power button for long enough it should power off, if not there is an issue with the hardware.

Thank you very much.

I got into recovery mode and phone is now doing the Update & Restore.

Thank you. Deon

DFU mode

Hi Deon the simplest thing to do would be to put the iPhone into DFU mode, you do this by the following these steps:

To put your iPhone 4 into Device Firmware Update (DFU) mode:

1. Connect your iPhone to the computer and start iTunes.
2. Turn off your iPhone by holding down the Sleep button and slide to power off.
3. Press and hold down the Sleep button and Home button simultaneously.
4. After 10 seconds release the Sleep button but continue to hold the Home button down.
5. iTunes will pop up a window that says it has "detected an iPhone in recovery mode."

Your device is now in DFU mode and can be restored using iTunes. The iPhone screen will remain black until iTunes restores the iPhone.

I hope this helps

Thanx Rajiv.

I will do DFU mode. I have done it once to jailbreak my iPhone.

I will need to try DFU mode since I now get an error 21. It says something about anti-virus stuff. I will check it out and post back here.

Update: iPhone corrupt and unusable

Hi all.

Just to give some feedback.

I have struggled last night to try and get the phone up and running. No luck.

I have tried to Jailbreak - no luck. I have uninstalled MS Essentials which was my anti-virus software and disabled Windows Defender and STILL iTunes is giving error 21 which relates to anti-virus software.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? If not, I probably need to take it to a place to have it fixed.

Thank you.

Try doing it from a different pc - or possibly even better a mac.

Have tried from another PC as well. Don't own a Mac. Will an Apple shop be able to fix this?

Hi and thank you for the reply.
Yes, very positive on both points. Have downloaded manually as well.

You are restoring iOS6, correct?
Is your iTunes version up to date? (should be 10.7)

Yes, everything is up to date with most recent versions. Phone is now at iStore which confirmed deeply corrupted software. They cannot even fix it the normal way with restore. It now has to stay there for total fix and software unique to the phone; at least this is what they told my Dad.

Thank you anyway. Deon

LOL.

Will probably be swapped if still under warranty.
