Use the Find My app on an iPhone, iPad or Mac, or visit icloud.com/find to take additional action.

Activation Lock is requesting your password on iPhone XS (iPhone XS).
For your security, Activation Lock requires your Apple ID and password, or your device passcode, before anyone can reactivate and use your device. It is enabled automatically when you enable Find My. If you are setting up this device, simply enter your Apple ID and password in the fields provided.

If they switched it off then you can't erase it. But neither can they get into it. Anything they do will erase it first if they can somehow get into it. Best case is they strip it for parts.

That is what i assume as well..

But if they doing above doesn't that mean Phone is on and they trying to Login?

Already got the last couple of iPhone 12 Pro in the Garden Route.. Luckily was due for an upgrade..

Still waiting on insurance..

Phones blacklisted with MTN & Cell C..
Dont click on any links you get via SMS, its the thieves sending you a link to a fake apple login page, thats how they get access.

I don’t get why Apple allows for their devices to be able to be turned off even when locked. Defeats the purpose of the Find My feature if you ask me.
I was thinking of this and thought maybe they make it so in case your device freezes and you need to force reboot it.

Not only Apple.

I have a Redmi 9 running Android 10 and I can turn my phone off by just holding in the power button even when locked. The OP actually made me try it and then I saw from your post Apple allows this too!

Yup they either put it on Flight mode from Control / Notification centre on Lock screen..

Have disabled that on new iPhone..

Or they just switch it off..

So far just getting those phishing sms every now and then seems to orignate from Moscow..

And these Activation lock messages..

I had this happen early this year. I even got a phone call from someone at "iStore Sandton" requesting I give the password over the phone. I got emails from a few email addresses for about three months along the lines of:

Its Muhammed here, i was sold an iphone Xs on the street why looking in the phone i saw it have your email as the apple id, so here is the deal, cape town we sell it as parts to fix other phones (screen and battery) for about R3000, which i got the phone for R1000 and it profits me R2000, as human i want to do the right thing buy talking to you... im ready to give you R3000 for the passcode so you dont run at lost i know what it takes to loss a phone.. please email me back ASAP your cell number for the ewallet or account number, but firstly you have to give me the passcode, so its up to you or not, think about it you have until tomorrow by noon to decide.

The screen was cracked and the battery health was under 75% so the spares weren't worth much.

That was in May, they continued requesting/begging/threatening for the Apple ID until August, which is when I assume they either scrapped it or stripped it for parts.

Set the phone to erase, at some point they will turn it on and it will run the erase.

Remove that iPhone from ALL your stuff:
- iCloud Account
- Bank Account(s)
- Google Account
- Microsoft Account etc....

Also ignore all SMS claiming be Find My iPhone with a shady link.
Tell anyone who was in your Emergency Contact list to ignore those Phishing SMSs to. When my Xs Max got stolen I discovered that some family members and friends got the Phishing SMSs to because they were in the emergency contacts.

Great! Shame man, is insurance working fast?

I hope you had backed up as often as possible lol, nothing more annoying and inconvenient than losing a phone, makes you realise how much of your life was on that thing.
