Hi everyone,
My iphone wont let me send e-mails (via edge or wifi), but all my outgoing email settings are correct...i can receive email however. Any suggestions?
Tim

what are you outgoing email settings? Maybe you've missed an encryption or something (especially if you are using gmail)

The settings are synced with my e-mail settings on my Mac. I have checked them and they are correct. I have also tried setting up an account manually, but still no good. By the way, I have a M-web account

Are you connecting via the mweb account (ie. through the sync connection), or via GPRS/3G to the net?

Good point youve got there..

If your outgoing settings are using the GPRS (i.e. vodacom smtp settings) you will have to use GPRS (the vodacom network) to send emails...

If you are using WiFi or the Synced connection as JAV said, you will have to use the ISP's outgoing SMTP server... SO if your on Mweb, you'll have to use their SMTP settings to send emails..

I think your settings are the ones of the cellular network (not sure which network your on, lets say vodacom) and you are trying to use these settings while connected to your Mweb Account which doesnt work..

Its hard to explain, hope you understand what im saying :(

What fxit said...
I believe you must be on the Mweb network to send emails.

Mweb and most other ISP's have their SMTP servers setup so that mails can only be sent from IP's on that are on their networks, to try and reduce (stop?) spam. Thus if you are connecting via, say Vodacom, you'll be unable to send via Mweb's servers (as fxit_man was explaining), you will have to send them then via Voda's servers.

That is also why most webhosts require authentication on their smtp server.

All the above replies are correct...which is another reason to use gmail (or at least the gmail smtp) :-)

So, what you have to do is change the SMTP server in the settings to smtp.vodacom.co.za (if you are on vodacom) or mail.mtn.co.za (i think, if you are on mtn). Then you will be able to send mails when you are using edge.

If you want to send mails over your wifi account at home, you'll have to change it back to mweb.

My suggestion is to get a better email provider so you won't have this problem. It will be a problem with any phone that has edge/3g and wifi and email on it. Most definitely not an iPhone thing before the haters come out to chirp.

Yeah, Get Gmail...

Enable imap for you Gmail account and save on bandwidth costs. ;)

Works perfectly with iPhone

I have read the posts on this forum and have tried that on my iPhone (16GB, unlocked, up and running - no problems with anything but the email and web browser ...) and just cannot get it going.

Could one of you guys please explain the whole thing, step by step: how do I set up my email account?

Just to give you the full detail:

I bought an Apple iPhone 16GB and everything is running well - it's unlocked, all my data/contacts, pics and music were synced with my MacBook Pro.

I'm on Vodacom (for smtp settings, I suppose) and my incoming mail server is Xsinet. I tried to sync the info re my mail settings via iTunes, but it just wouldn't work: iTunes keeps on telling me it can't do it as the iPhone is using the email address. Even after deleting all info re the email address from the iPhone, it still doesn't work.

What should I do? It really helps me a lot to have email and web facilities at hand, but I just can't seem to get it going.

Thanks

Chris

Having a similar problem here.

I have an iPhone with Vodacom. Have tried to add an additional SMTP server but it keeps trying to "authenticate" it and never does - I eventually just have to exit back to my home screen.
I have tried smtp.vodacom.co.za (no username or password) and smtp.vodamail.co.za (my 2782.... username and password). Neither of them seem to work.

Is anyone out there got the Vodacom or Vodamail smtp servers working with their iPhones?

Using firmware 2.1 by the way.

Mweb Settings for iPhone

Quite some months since first post in this thread... anyhooo I finally got mine sorted. Googled "mweb iPhone" got to technical post:

E-mail : Configuring your iPhone
Important: E-mail setup on an iPhone differs from any other cellphone. Please only use the instructions on this page to set up your iPhone or iPod Touch to manage your MWEB e-mail.

Actually got my vodacom SMTP server (smtp.vodacom.co.za) working too. Just have to leave it for like 5 mins when creating the account. It eventually thows up a pop-up regarding the SSL - which you then just tuen off :D
