anyways... had some time now with my iPhone and let me compare vs my old phone Samsung D900i
Screen is much better on iPhone and clearly visible in the sunlight. D900i also had a superb screen.
I use email a lot on my phone and a web browser. Safari on iPhone is pretty sweet although i am a bit pissed with how it renders MyBB (any iPhone users have a tip here). On the samsung i used Opera Mini which is actually not a bad browser at all... but no comparison in terms of comfort and ease vs the iPhone.
I have not made many phone calls on the iPhone but the ones i have done have been great... No reception probs or clarity probs. In fact almost better then the Samsung, but then i also switched to a real network. Current is Vodacom, Old network cell c.
The build quality of the iPhone is exceptional but still early days to tell - But then the samsung has done some pretty amazing things (like a car driving over it... twice) and still working strong.
The map functionality is awesome on the iphone however the position system is not that great... as in it is fairly accurate and tells you in a block radius where you are. Also what is annoying is that not all road names are labelled. Garmin wins here.
Touch screen does take a while to get used to... the keyboard is awesome once you get into it although you sometimes do lack that tactile response. Would be nice if the phone vibrated each time you pressed a button just to give it some tactility.
This is available through Jailbreak - app called iVibrate
But not everything apple makes is perfect (cough Apple TV).
The screen is always messy with fingers marks and with the back being this beautiful black polished surface you scared to put it on or near anything that may scratch it.
I would recommend Scratch Guard as your screen protector from Incredible Connection. Or a GelaSkin sticker to protect the back, also available from IC.
The app store is very reminiscent of the ole Yahoo widgets site in that there is a whole bunch of useless things. For some reason i cant access iTunes Music Store (any help here would be appreciated)
South Africa doesn't have it's own iTunes MUSIC Store yet, only app store, which is very limited compared to US store.
No MMS or custom ringtone (unless you SSH your way there), which to me is an oversight on Apple's side. Every modern phone should have customisable ringtones and atleast the ability to MMS.
MMS is available from Cydia. Everyone uses E-mail these days anyway. Custom ringtones came be made with a little application available in Cydia as well.
Wi-Fi is pretty solid in that it is not finicky (like my ancient Imate Kjam was).
The thing that blows your mind with the iPhone are the little things. Auto brightness for your screen. Why other mobile phones dont do this is beyond me. The touch screen itself is awesome. So intuitive and easy to use. I like how it turns off when you raise the phone to your ear...
Very clever! So you don't accidentally end the call with your cheek.
The accelerator/angle detector is pretty cool. Wish it would change everything depending how you hold the phone. Suppose next gen will do that.
I am a bit pissed that you HAVE to use iTunes, cuz lets face it. iTunes was made by Satan to piss us all off.
iTunes runs super-fast on Mac OSX
Hard to gauge battery life as it is running down pretty fast cuz I cant keep my hands off it every moment i get.
I investigated Jailbreak for it, but I do not see the point except maybe to be able to send MMS or something.
Anyway. Iphone - do I regret it yet? No.
