heard that we are getting the european version (as with many things) of the iphone.

apparently they are launching it in europe during december this year.

and unlike the us (edge only) version that has been launched already, the eu version will have 3g/hsdpa connectivity.

whoohooo! :)
 
They already announced the UK version and hardware wise it it identical to the US model.
 
heard from a source that they will launch the 3g version in ZA due to the popularity of 3g in za.

but, will have to wait and see.

well, lets hope we get the 3g version... dont think it will be a good idea if apple doesnt introduce the 3g version as many people expect that technology from a phone with that price tag. :)
 
And shortly there after we can all have them stolen from us in the shopping malls as they are going to be high ticket items. ;)

Then dont expect the phone for a while because as far as markets go SA is an afterthought.

Apple has a much better infrastructure in Europe as well as an iTunes Store.

I guess it all depends on which of the local operators (if any) gives Apple what they want which is a large cut of the monthly revenue (O2 gave them 40%).

yes, you're right. i also heard that apple said they will distibute the iphone mainly through network operators (and their dealers) but will have it in their istores, etc. as well.

either way, i cant wait. it really is a super device! (i think) :)

Ouch, never knew the revenue share was that high. I think apple need to back off a bit with this. They get enough money from the hardware itself. Expecting a 40 % revenue share from phone calls is extremely arrogant in my opinion.
 
Back off a bit? :confused: With all the UK networks vying for the deal why would Apple want to give it away for less if they didnt have to? O2 made the offer, Apple accepted - that doesnt make them arrogant.
 
Remember one thing. The iPhone is the first (and so far only) phone that will make people *want* to use it to go online. And not to get the headers and text mode content of their e-mail. No. To download stuff off iTunes. We're talking big bandwidth usage here. Considering what traffic over GPRS still cost, there's some seriously big bucks to be made for the network that can give their clients an iPhone.

I don't think traffic generated by iTunes is gonna be that heavy. A few hundred songs per user maybe. That's not gonna have a big effect when compared to 3G downloading onto a laptop.

Well i would agree that it is good business, what telkom do is also good business.

My gripe is not with apple getting the money, but rather with the long wait which these "revenue sharing" requirements generate for consumers. I can't see most of the worlds operators jumping on board overnight. 40% isnt exactly gonna drive adoption.

In the long term, apple is going to make a killing. We know that much, just a pitty consumers are going to have to wait years.
