teams may be fined in excess of R3.2-m if they go over the allotted time.

That is just absurd. First they want to make the game longer with extra time-outs for extra ads. Now they want to make even more money by forcing the teams to keep the game short.

I know, it's starting to become even more of a money grabbing thing

It's only confusing if you think about it from the POV of a spectator.

When you look at shorter play and longer breaks through the gimlet eyes of an advertiser it, sadly, makes perfect sense.

And what exactly will they do with that money? Where will it go?
Will it be used to pay the fat cat cricket bosses even bigger bonuses or will they use it for development of cricket in rural areas? I doubt it will be for development.

I doubt the league was started to promoted development in rural areas, but then, it's probably at the team bosses own discretion.

True, but I am sure these fees will not go to the organizers but rather to the SA cricket board and/or the respective province, eg Titans, Lions.

Maybe it is the overtime for Supersport cameramen?

Might be, but I think SA cricket board must make most of their money out of ticket sales, coverage etc and SA as a whole benefit from the tourism

Why should the IPL have any obligation to cricket development in South Africa? Yes, it would be nice - but the IPL didn't come here to be nice. :)

But they've got to earn JP Duminy's salary somewhere. :)

I think you guys are looking at this the wrong way, they are making massive fines so teams will not go over time, if they made it a small amount they may think the fine is worth the extra time, now they will not.

I have no problem with the system. It works.

But R3.2 Million??????
I understand that it is probably worse case scenario.
It still is a lot of money. Will one team be able to afford it if it happens to them twice in one season?

The thing is with a fine like that you can be sure it won't happen, that is the point of the massive fine.

Don't know how many games will be played but I am pretty sure someone will be fined for slow over rates. It might not be 3.2mill but it will happen.

Who cares? The teams are owned by the Bollywood stars. They will be paying the fines.

The money will go towards paying the airtime that has been "stolen" from advertisers etc etc.

You guys have any idea what that time is worth?

Look the players know how fast they should be doing what and there is no excuse to be late. If their is the umpires will note it and the team won't be fined.

I do however wish that they would take a part of the fine and give it to charities.

I am happy about this. Now hopefully the captains and teams will stick to the allotted time. The ICC's fines which are a lot smaller than this hasn't worked at all.

The only other alternative is fine times with runs, you lose a certain amount of runs for each over you are behind. But that's difficult to implement .

You lot seem outraged that the IPL is all about money. What the **** did you think it was about?

The reason is simple. The matches have to be broadcast - that is the reason that the tournament exists (the hundreds of millions of Indian cricket fans want to watch it) . If they run long, the broadcaster has to either replace other programming or not show the end of the match. Since the broadcaster is the one paying the most money, they get to call the tune.
