I got my first iPod yesterday and have always thought iTunes to be the greatest piece of software around. Maybe I haven't explored it enough, but I don't find it that fast or easy to use :/

Firstly I have a 'music' folder than I keep all my (ordered) music in - about 99 percent. There are others around the PC - but these aren't ordered and I don't want them on. Automatically it added all MP3s on the PC and instead of simply allowing it to point to MY directory.

Secondly - its slow. Very slow. After adding my library - it converts WAVs and 'anaylses gap information' which takes HOURS. I bought the iPod yesterday and still have't used it due to creating library TWICE and errors.

The error I refer to was when the library was built the first time, it only synced 30 percent before saying complete :/ This is why I started fresh.

Lastly, it doesn't seem to have a 'watch folder' function? So if I delete/add to the folder, it'd update the library in the background. My 5yr old media product allowed me to set watch folders.

Is there any other way of organising iPod music with iTunes?

Go consolidate library this will sort your music. How many gbs are you trying to add to itunes?

About 140GB.

Let me go read up on what that actually does (I never read ...)

If you dont want itunes to organise your music for you then disable that in the preferences.

Also consider if you want itunes to copy everything you want to import into the library or not.

I use Foobar2000 with iPod plugin, much better solution, IMO.

sjoe and here i thought i was the only one who had problems with itunes and ipods. when i started using winamp the other day with my daughters ipod i found it much easier to use.

Old dogs and new tricks? :p :)

What they said, plus:

The only reason it added all of the music on your PC is because you told it to when it first started up. It doesn't do that by itself.

Go download the newest version of iTunes - it will watch your folders.

Ok - its done everything I want now ... just not too user friendly.

So the reason I bought the iPod (and specifically the large one), was because I bought an iPod adapter for my car last week and thought it'd be cool to carry my collection and listen to anything I want.

R7,500 later, I realise it can't search or even jump to a letter! I have to SCROLL and to get passed a single letter take about a minute of holding the button down. If I want Matchbox 20, it's going to take 13 minutes of scrolling! How dumb are manufactures? :/

Oh well ... I'll just create a ton of playlists.

Thanks for the advice!

You're obviously a bit digitally (pun intended) challenged. If you scroll quickly it scrolls by letter. Also, what do you mean "holding the button down"? It's a scroll wheel. Why did it cost you R7500?

I'm not talking about the iPod itself.

I had a R4,000 iPod adapter (and a R3,400 iPod) installed so I can see the tracks on my radio and control the iPod from the steering wheel (tracks, folders etc)

I can search on the car itself - and after Googling, seems most cars can't
