iPod Touch for Skype

Would you recommend getting an iPod Touch as a Skype over Wi-Fi device?

Are there any other recommended non-cellphone devices which make computerless Wi-Fi Skype possible / affordable?
 
iPod Touch 4G works great for Skype over wifi. Not much more to say, is there ? Fire away if you have any questions.

No questions really, just needed to check that my [totally justified] bias towards Apple products is not clouding my judgement (I'm using the iPhone 3GS & iPad 1).

I did initially do a search for handheld Skype devices but the prices are similar or higher than iPod Touch! That's a no-brainer for me, but this is for my Dad as a gift to my Mom who wants to keep in touch with the family overseas.

So, unless anyone can suggest anything else, my Dad of 81 years old is about to buy an iPod Touch!

Just be aware of the initial hassles with iTunes - someone else may need to set it up for him !

Good point!

That would be me and my MacBook.

They probably won't want to buy lots of apps either, so it should be fairly simple.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I think my Mom would love the iPad 2, but the iPod Touch is more within budget.

Although, I'll check the prices and let my Dad decide what he's willing to spend.
 
Got a cheap 500 buck wifi phone that does skype. Does the job, if u can afford the ipod touch u can always double it up as a cool remote control. New ipod touch do facetime? That cld be a motivator as well if it does.
 
phiber, yes it does and... When the IOS 5 update arrives the OP and his dad will be able to use iChat as well/instead.
 
BTW, the iPod Touch is also capable of video calling, but Skype doesn't support it as yet on the iPod - it should come, though !

Hey ...go on ...be a good son & buy it for them.
Remember all the toys they bought for you when u were a kid! ;)
 
I have an iPod touch which my kids use and an iPhone.

The battery life is not too good on the iPod. Lasts like half a day. Not sure if the kids damaged it by charging it wrongly.
 
I have the ipod touch 3rd generation (i think) and skype works perfectly on it.

No, they did not damage it, that is quite typical.

You do get external batteries for it, though, those can be quite useful - for smartphones as well !
