Hi

I have a question about ISP service providers. . We are with mweb, originally with Tiscali, and we are upgrading to ADSL. We normally use it for email and browsing, , and also to use skype. I think 1G should be enough? But the problem is we want to keep our email address, because of business. What is the best option go with Mweb, or go with another provider and keep the dial up connection with Mweb which we are paying special price because of teh arrangement between Tiscali and Std Bank. Is teh service of Mweb and anotehr one of teh cheaper ones the same standard?

Thank you
Andrea

Hi Andrea - 1GB should be enough to start off with, but remember MWEB isn't the cheapest at all. They charge R135 I think it is? for 1GB. You can get per-GB prices from around R63/GB from other ISPs.

As for the e-mail address, why not get a domain name and then an email hosting account? Domain names cost next to nothing, and an email address@your-domain is miles better than @mweb.co.za, especially when it's a business address.

All you have to do if you change your email address is send a mail to everyone in your addressbook notifying them of the change of address.. just in idea :)

Mweb do a sub-r80 email package that gives you 3-4 hours a month access - more than enough if you're actually going to be accessing your mweb email from your adsl. This way you also still keep access to all the other mweb stuff.

While you're there set up a auto-forward to a new email account (if you're a business there is really no excuse not to have your own domain) and auto-reply to inform people of your new addy. I'm pretty sure you can do this all via webmail.

We have discussed this email problem before, but it is worth repeating:

Get your own domain. Every business should - pay someone to help you if you need to. Every individual who has the skills or knows someone who can help for free, should do so as well. Having your mail @bloodsuckingISP.co.za is a sucker move.

I cannot believe that any half-decent business will still use ISP provided email accounts. The mind boggles at how totally Internet illiterate SA companies are. I dont care if it is a one mand band selling spice racks. Jeez, a coza domain costs R50 a year. Thats R4 a month....

Then you can get cheap overseas hosting for another few rand and off you go.

Come on Andrea, these ISP emails are just a ploy to make it more difficult to change ISPs and it does nothing for image.

Theres lots of people here who will help answer further questions.

Hope you make the change.

Domain names are free now, and you only pau yearly renewal as Freshly-ZN has said. Hosting is also cheap, but since you are only going to use hosting for email, it should be next to nothing.

Hey I like what I'm reading as regards email, what sort of spam filters are available for domain name owners, are they normally included with the cheap domain name package?

Yes. They come with your Host, usually. I use serv.co.za, but it is international. Some people want local, but Iwould never know why.

So let me see if understand all this:

I register my domain name at www.co.za and it only costs R50.00 a year.
Then, as I only want the email service, I get an ISP to provide email hosting.
Then I can receive and send emails from my own domain name.

One last question: I cant seem to find the costs of email only hosting. How much is "cheap".

No one mentioned that you need DNS zones setup if you want to register your domain with .co.za. You can do this with some freeDNS company, or pay your hosting provider to do it... don't pay more than R100.00 upfront and R75.00 per year.

Regards Email, cheap is cheap... we charge R15.00 per month per address, or R69.00 per month for upto 10 addresses. You could probably get it cheaper if you look around, but be carfull when selecting an ISP. You don't want your email down all the time.

Also, do what you can to move away from MWeb, they're rediculously over priced.

It might also pay to get your ADSL and your hosting from 1 company, that way you only have to call 1 place if something doesn't work.

Thats pretty much it. Hosting internationally is dirt cheap these days and incredibly easy.

Just for a reference point godaddy.com offers an economy plan consisting of 5gb webspace, 250gb transfer, 10 mysql databases and 500 email addresses for $3.95 (r25) per month. I use a different host but seeing as you're looking for something basic it would suffice - and if it didnt you can just move on over to a different host.

Remember - just because its a .co.za domain it doesnt mean it needs to be hosted locally.

EDIT - just to make things easier for yourself - first find a host - then register the domain when you have the name server addresses. That is always the troublesome area.

That's correct... Godaddy is good to, quite reliable. It doesn't even have to be a .co.za, .com's etc. are cheap to +/- R55.00 per year. (or R1025 per year from Telkom)

The only hitch of course is that you don't have a local contact number should anything go wrong.

But thats the beauty of voip - use something like skype and the only thing you have to worry about is the time zone and most of these guys are 24/7/365.

@Telkomhater - dont misunderstand me - local would be awesome and I look forward to the day that telkom allows local businesses to compete favorably with their overseas counterparts.

True, that's how we comunicate with the data centers in which our international servers are located.

I do prefer when users opt for local hosting, I feel we need to try and keep some money in South Africa... I suppose the happiest comprimise would be to support a South African company who has international servers, and passes the cost benefits to it's clients. (like us :p)

But there are many local ISP's with favourable hosting packages, both local and international, so there is a lot of choice.

Thanks for the all the help everyone. I really appreciate this discussion. I have continued the discussion in another forum that has the appropriate heading - "Email addy woes when changing ISPs" by Debbie2
