ShowMax, DSTV's streaming service and a number of other IPTV services are very legal. There may be other less legal IPTV services in existence.

My guess is that it does not use adaptive streaming, so if your internet is up to the task, then it works, if you have typical South African internet where latency increases, with load, then you will have issues. Ironically, the higher the speed of the connection the more prelavent this issue becomes.

Check Google for something called "bufferbloat", where the subject gets in depth analasys

No, it is the normal channel thats is broadcast via terrestial or satelite, now being delivered via the internet. So if Dstv broadcast mnet, via the internet that would make it an iptv.

Streaming service is watch what you want when you want. Show max is definitely a streaming service.

You confusing your apples and oranges, read the link that pineapple smurf posted. It explains what it is.

Traditional TV channels being delivered via internet, IPTV.

Netflix, Amazom Prime and Showmax- streaming services. Not set channels, no timeslots etc.
 
How would I know if an ISP is licensed and which country it's legal
 
What I actually want to know is.. other than dstv which iptv licenced streaming service can be used that would have all sport channels available. Dstv is ridiculously expensive. Other than that which VPN is trustworthy and reliable?

Any video material dilivered via the internet is IPTV.

Whether NetFlix, DSTV, Showmax, or Skollie in his garage, in Benoni, streaming porn to his Brother in Boksburg, over a "borrowed" Wi-Fi connection, it is still all IPTV.
