IPv6 Roll Out

For those of us using Asus routers, what should the settings be for IPv6?

Asus Router IPV6 1.jpg
  • I'm guessing WAN connection type as Automatic (as indicated) for DHCP?
  • Should anything be specified in the Class-identifier option for Openserve?
  • Under Authentication, there are two options, None and 802.1x MD5. Maybe the latter, which then gives the option to enter a username and password?

Think everything should be as indicated on the IPv6 tab.

Which D-Link routers are those exactly? I am having a problem getting IPv6 to work on the Afrihost supplied D-Link DIR825. I have updated firware to 3.0.7.

The G1 Hardware version.

Are you struggling with getting Ipv6 working on your d-link?

Your IPv6 settings are perfect however you WAN connection needs to be PPPoE if you are using Openserve. on Openserve Ipv4 is via PPPoEv4 and IPv6 is via DHCPv6. Once you save and reboot you will get a prefix from us starting with 2c0f:f4c0::/32

Thanks for the reply.

I tried it on PPPoE and it works fine for getting the IPv4 connection going, but the router is not gettting an IPv6 address as far as I can see.

These are the options in the WAN Connection Type drop-down box.

Should it still be on PPPoE for IPv6?

O yes, this is actually for an Axxess account, does that make a difference? If I do a traceroute I see ip.afrihost.co.za as the first few hops, so I assumed both work the same.

I manage quite a few Afrihost clients so will be nice to know this for the future.

Update: It looks like it should be set to PPPoE dual-stack/DHCPV6, neither of which is an option on the RT-AX58U.

Can almost not believe it, as this is a brand new midrange Wi-Fi 6 router with all the configuration options you can dream of.

Guess we should wait then until Asus enable it in a future firmware update - whenever that might be.

Under wan it should be pppoe.

Under the ipv6 settings it should be native with PD/Prefix delegation enabled.

Axxess has their own ipv6 ranges. I will inquire to see if they have ipv6 enabled or not.

Thanks a lot, @AfriNatic

I updated the post with the latest results, but it looks like it is not going to work.

Asus do not support PPPoE for IPv6 yet (towards bottom of page), even on their latest routers & firmware.

@Leno / @deweyzeph / any other Mikrotik'ers, I just set up my MK from a clean wipe running 7.1.5 and followed my initial Pastebin (https://pastebin.com/d28aZZe4) but it does not seem to be working. Back when I did it the first time there was no link local or any default settings and it worked (albeit a little buggy with the refresh).

I'm getting the /60 from pppoe and assigning it to a pool and assigning the pool to the bridge interface, from running an ipconfig i can see my laptop has a IPv6 and Link-local, but it seems like the routing is not working.

I've left all the default settings there just added the mangle from https://pastebin.com/d28aZZe4 which made no difference in the routing obviously.

Do you have it working on 7.1.5? Can you show me your settings? Any custom routes you needed to add?

As a test try disable all your queues if you have, and disable then re enable ipv6 (ipv6 menu -> settings)

There was a bug with queues and ipv6 which broke connection tracking, so the firewall drop invalid packets rule would break everything

A great troubleshooting tool is the ipv6->firewall then connections tab, you should see every connection request and if its struggling (eg only sending packets etc)

Unfortunately I was part of the Rocketnet ipv6 beta so I have a static ipv6 allocation so my config would be different

thanks, I actually sorted it out now.

for all on mikrotik here's my config (including all the defconf stuff that comes along with routeros 7.x)

mostly defconf with a few tweaks

I know this setting is incorrect but if I set "Get IPv6" to automatically it seems to work, I get an IPv6 IP address and if I do an IPv6 test everything tests perfectly. Or am I missing something?

Automatic basically checks which is supported and uses that. It doesn't always work if there is a delay with the lease being allocated but if it works for you you can keep the setting at that.

For now clients on Openserve, Vumatel and Vuma Reach are excluded because Openserve does not support native IPv6. Vumatel runs the DHCP and Vumatel runs pppoe on Vuma Reach.

All other operators will be supported. We will give you a ipv6 IP and a natted ipv4 ip for services that does not support ipv6 yet.
Is this why my Mikrotik is not picking up a IPv6? I am on Openserve, ISP Afrihost.
