IPv6 Roll Out

I suspect the loss of the v6 this morning on my phone is more a Mikrotik config thing than an Afrihost thing.

Still want to confirm the lease as we do 30 days on DHCP if I'm not mistaken.

We are still working on everything. We have a bunch of networks all running different setups. Fo example the majority of the Fibre networks we use DHCPv6 for IPv6 while for Openserve and Vodacom we use PPPoEv6 so it's quite a job to make sure everything works as expected and to make sure the routing is fine.

Also check that your phone isnt doing that privacy thing where it changes it mac address every so often, Stateless Autoconfig relies on mac address and it could just be confusing things

VumaReach...?

Morning,

I must admit that personally I'm not that familiar with Mirotik routers. I will have to source one to play around with.

I will have a chat with our system engineers to talk about the lease time.
I have 1 for you. 100Mb ports but still supports the latest routeros.

ah.. valid point. from what i read it's supposed to randomise per ssid (s21+ android 11) but i've taken note of the current mac to see if it changes.

IPv6 speedtests vs. 4 are consistently lower (100/50 OS)

Ok had time to actually look at this now, I see it was set on Randomised MAC for my home SSID I changed it to Phone Mac. It hadn't lost v6 yet, but I see i had 2 different ones, same prefix - so the mac must've changed.

@AfriNatic my ipv4's geolocation always says CPT, the v6 says JHB; are you guys going to update your geolocation data for regional ranges?

This is good news. Previously @AfriNatic said (maybe 2 months ago) that they are assigning /64 only. But with a /60 it leaves you with 16 subnets which is plenty for normal home use.
@AfriNatic checking my uncle's ipv6 (frogfoot) his is a /64 but mine is a /60

I will ask why but I believe it might be an Openserve requirement.

With regards to the lease time that is what Openserve assigned we don't have control over that unfortunately.

I looked at them once but you must have a windows app to configure them (back then). Have you ever tried pfsense?
You can config them via web and ssh too. There is a homebrew port of winbox and it can run in wine too.

I've (very) briefly looked at pfsense (fired up a docker container) and I can see they're used at a lot of ISPs but Mikrotik has given me all the advanced tools I need so far.

I've also toyed with the idea of the edgerouter but again theres been no reason for me to make a move from Mikrotik just yet.

It's been over 24hrs and I got the same prefix still. Doesn't bother me, my adjusted MK config is working fine still

No ipv6 again this morning on my phone or MacBook.

Reconnected to WiFi and it's working again.

Not sure what to try next
