I just read that 4 of the root DNS servers are going to support IPv6 soon. Does this mean that all ADSL connections in SA might get static IPs soon/imminently or am I missing something?

There was not reason not to give us static IP Addresses before IPv6 ... and they still did not do it ... why would they now do it with IPv6?
But, thanks 4 the headzup ... perhaps we can begin broadcasting content properly now instead of having bandwidth be wasted on duplicate downloads.

brief summary on the benefits of ipv6 or 4 please.

IPV6 = longer address, = 1000000 times more IP Addresses available, which means we should never ever run out, so we could keep an ip address for life, and it could become the new ID number and ... :p

Also, a change in the way that broadcasting works makes it possible to broadcast data to a whole bunch of select individuals, not just a subset mask like in ipv4.

Didn't know that. Sounds like the Torrent crew had a say in the specification designing. I just hope they also kept the DDos crew in mind.

My thinking was that if there are suddenly loads of addresses then supply/demand of them is out of whack and consequently they become mega cheap and everyone can have one. IPv4 static addresses costs some $$$ atm I think.

Would one have to buy a new router/NIC to make use of this? Or would a firmware upgrade enable these devices? (Assuming our favorite company implements it)

Thx for the links.
