This isn't some fringe group, this is a government that represents 77 million people, acting on the policy of an Islamic religious council(the ultimate decider in legislative power in Iran).

They arrested woman because they decided to dress in a way that is normal to the rest of the world, yet the first port of call is to defend Islam, not the woman.

It is the brainwashing. Psychologically their self has been so tightly coupled with the religion that they are incapable of stepping back and having an objective view that is any way critical of their religion without being critical of themselves.

Logic doesn't work.

Generally I would agree with you, but in the case of Islam (as practiced in the Middle East), I'm making an exception.

A lot actually. Islam calls for modesty, you can't deny that. The government/legal system follows Islam and enacts it in laws. This is nothing but Islam in practice.

I'm not going to respect the practice of female genital mutilation.
I'm not going to respect the practice of killing albinos.
I'm not going to respect the practice of throwing homosexuals from the top of minarets or high buildings.
The list goes on.

If you respect any of the above then I don't know what to say.
