IRC & ADSL not working proper

Hi, I got adsl at work and I can connect to irc using mIRC and it works for about 1 minute then it just dies. I dont get disconnected just nothing happens.. after about 5 mins i get msg [10053] Software caused connection abort. could any1 plz advise. We using netgear router btw.

I used to get that a lot too. I dont know what causes it as i'm not that tech savvy, I do know a quick and dirty fix we discovered by accident.

In your status window you start a timer
/timer10 0 10 /msg dfjgdhgfhdfgd blah

it's crude and dirty but it cuts out the connection aborts by about 95%

Try forwarding the ports on the router, might help, dunno what ports IRC uses though.

mIRC uses TCP 6667.

Depending on the server, irc can use any port which is available really. What server are you connecting to?

Im connecting to zanet on port 6667.. will try different ports i know connecting to shadowfire does the same thing.

You can try those or I dunno

A Netgear router (well mine atleast) come with a preconfigurred option for allowing IRC when you go to the fort forwarding page, if it doesnt then just enable 6667-6668
