Hey guys,

I have been searching the forums for a while now... but I still haven't found an answer...

I keep on timing out in IRC, after like.. 5 minutes of inactivity, if my IRC is minimized, when I restore it and try type something it disconnects me. I have a Telkom Router (Marconi, white ugly one).. does anyone know why this happens or how I can solve it? Any help will really be appreciated, this is getting sooooo irritating. :(

Thanks in advance,
Skinty

Skinty,

Trust me, I am no techinical expert, in fact calling me a 'novice' is even saying too much, but judging by a couple of the posts recently it seems that in the past 10 days or so there have been quite a few problems with IRC. I know I have had trouble every day connecting using mIRC.

I won't say anything more for fear of massive embarassment from posting a stupid post, but I just thought I'd give you my two cents :)

Hehe, thanks for the post debbie. I am aware of all the problems with IRC lately, but this has been a problem for about a month now.. and im so over it, so I thought maybe you guys could help me out. I was told that my router range is really bad and it is known for this issue, and changing it to Dial-Up mode would solve it... but im not too keen on that idea :/ If anyone has an immediate solution i'd REALLY appreciate it. Going to save up for a new router so long so if this could be fixed i'd really be happy.

Thanks again,
Skinty.

your ping reply.. that whole "Ping Pong!" seems to not happen, or gets blocked in some way...

Thats what keeps your connection alive when in idle, need to sort that out. All I know, it should work to maybe reinstall irc? I figure your using an mirc morph?

Hey Clipse,

I unticked the "Hide Ping? Pong! Event" thing in IRC options, meaning.. I see the Ping? Pong! It helps alot, but still times out eventually...

it should work to maybe reinstall irc?
I've tried reinstalling countless times, doesn't help. :(

I figure your using an mirc morph?
Tried and tested: NoNameScript, HiX and normal miRC.

There was a post here somewhere where the cause of this was identified as the Win XP firewall - install a stand-alone firewall and disable the XP one

question are you with uunet/uncapped account?
i had the same problem during testing uncapped account, changed back to normal=A OK

hey there Skint

i know this is a bit late, but i only read this thread today...

I had exactly the same problem as you have/had with mIRC timing out...
I fixed this problem by disabling the firewall in the modem setup page, mIRc never times out anymore... but i'm not really sure if it's a good thing turning off that firewall :P

I'm using a Marconi 4-port ethernet router

One problem i'm having is forwarding ports for dcc... can anyone give me a dummies guide to doing this? must i add the ports to virtual server and the firewall inbound policy? and what ports should i be forwarding?

IRC port is 113 and if i remember right, TCP.
Not a techie just did what i was told...

It works better now, but still unstable lately

yeah ident server is port 113 on tcp... however i can't seem to get dcc to work

says something like invalid parameters

also i'm not sure if i'm ACTUALY forwarding the ports properly... i add them to virtual server but i can't see any ports that i have supposedly openend on www.canyouseeme.org

anyone know how i can check if i've properly forwarded the ports??
