Anyone got any advice on how I get my GPRS modem connection set up via IrDA on my Nokia 5100. I get good connection via the data cable, but I am keen to see what sort of connection I can get on infrared.

I can get the phone and the laptop to recognise each other no problem, I just don't know what the next step is to get the dial up to go via the infrared port.

Any suggestions?

Make sure the infrared modem is available on the list in control panel, phone and modem options. If not, use the 5140 cd to add it or try and download it. Test the modem by going to diagnostics and query modem. If it works, you should see "success" and a bunch of other stuff appear in the diagnostic window. Dunno, but maybe you need the init string under advanced too - something like at+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet"

Then go to the new connection wizard in accessories, communications. Set up a manual, dial-up internet connection using the Nokia 5140 infrared modem. Make the username and password blank and dial *99***1#.

Thanks Ajax. I got the infrared modem from Nokia PCsuite and installed it and it works fine and I am now connected via IrDA. It seems pretty fast, why did I waste R300 on a data cable? Why does no one in the MTNSP shops know about this? When I asked, they told me I had to buy a bluetooth phone. I then found out about data cables myself, and now I have stumbled across IrDA (thanks to MyADSL forum) and it works really well even on my old Nokia 5100 which I have had for two years without realising it could do all this. Where have I been all this time? Must have been a very good lunch.

The 9500 has a built in modem that you can use via infra red or cable or bluetooth. However if you wish to use the infra red, then in tools you will see modem and there you can activate the modem via infra red.
