Irene Charnley is the former the MTN group executive vice-president responsible for the Middle East, North and East Africa region. Prior to her current appointment, she served as commercial director for the MTN Group and was responsible for MTN’s growth strategy. Under her leadership, MTN has been transformed from an organisation spread across six countries into an 11-country operation with more than 20-million subscribers. In 2005, she was responsible for the acquisitions of mobile companies and licences amounting to $1-billion, resulting in MTN becoming a premier mobile company in Africa and the Middle East.

Charnley was voted one of the top-50 businesswomen outside the United States by Fortune magazine. She has been at the forefront of black economic empowerment in South Africa. During her time at Johnnic, was instrumental in the Ikageng scheme, which saw 32 000 previously disadvantaged South Africans buy shares in Johnnic. In another landmark transaction, in 2002 Charnley was instrumental in a R4-billion management and staff buy-in into the MTN Group.
