Irratic Problems with Browsing

Hi all.

I'm posting this out of sheer desperation. Internet browsing through my Marconi ADSL POTS router is getting extremely infuriating. Every few minutes my access to internet sites seems to "cease" temporarily, which leads to the sites timing out in my browser.

When this happens, I now keep a command prompt window open and start to ping a remote server, sometimes the DNS server, sometimes not. I then wait for the server to reply, which can take 30 secs to a minute, then I can hit the reload button on my browser again to load the website (that a minute ago was "unavailable").

This gets repeated over and over.

Now, at my previous work, I hear that the office ADSL line is giving the same behaviour.

Anybody else experiencing this?

PS: No, it's not my router dropping the line and re-connecting that is causing this. The DSL_LINK line is always lit - never seen is not lit - it only flashes on start-up.

I had this problem a while ago too, on a Windows XP machine that I had hooked up to my network. This did not happen to the Solaris and Linux boxes on the network. At the time I attributed it to some sort of problematic internals of Windows (perhaps garbage collection, dumping of some bit bucket or cache emptying process), but the problem went away when I threw out XP... [:p]

Well, I'm not running XP.

I have two machines, the one running Mac OS X, the other running FreeBSD.

Both machines are affected, so it's definitely not OS related.

Hmm... can only be at SAIX, then. Or maybe a DSLAM prob. Thankfully I don't currently seem to have the problem <*rolls eyes pleadingly upwards and crosses fingers*>. Mebbe other forumites can provide some additional input here...

I also tend to think it might be at the exchange (DSLAM).

Now for the difficult part. Convincing Telkom of the problem and getting someone to do do something about it.
