Hi All,

My partner has an ADSL capped account and is using up her data at an alarming rate. The data usage seems irregular to me. The amount of data being uploaded is usually just short of the amount of data being downloaded. See the attached graph of data usage from Afrihost.

Its a very different pattern to what i see on my usage.

Can anybody advise if they have seen a similar usage pattern and what could advise what could be causing this?

This is my usage pattern:

Is she using torrents? Have you run antivirus/spyware remover? Automatic updates on for anything? Is her wifi connection protected, ie white list entry, not default passwords for access to router or wifi? There are so many ways you could explain this. I could really go on and on...

Best bet is to ask the ISP for a break down of the her usage.

Had something similar happen to someone I know, ended up being some spyware from going onto a dodgy site and installing some pdf reader.

The wifi connection is protected, passwords have been changed.

In her flat, they don't have any PC's.

The only devices connecting to the router are 2 iphones (1 x iphone 5s, and 1 x iphone 6s) and 1 ipad. The odds of spyware on these devices? Apps are only from the app store?

Can i check how much data is being uploaded on each of the apple devices?

The iDevices are doing iCloud backups.

This may be the issue, however the initial backup would be large and thereafter incremental right?

I dont have an idevice, and dont claim to know how they work, but the backups from my phone (pictures to dropbox and google photos) are small amounts daily

You can check under settings the backup size and how large the next backup will be.

Is this like a full system backup or would this also include the photo syncing?

If you check under settings you can choose what it backups, you can enable or disable individual apps, including photo backups, it will then tell you how large the current backup is and how large the next backup will be.

Thats really useful advise. Let me ask her to check that out.
