So I'm working in central Africa in a fairly stressful job due to high expectations from Europe and poor quality of sub contractor locally.

Over the last couple of months I've noticed my heart beating strangely. Not a regular rhythmic beat, but more of a double beat and sometimes it's like all over the place. As if I've just had 5 double espresso and a case of red bull.

So I went to the doctor here last week, ECG showed my heart to be beating as described, doc says I should go back to SA for a sonar scan and 24 hour ECG. I'm leaving Wednesday night, back in CT Thursday, appointment with cardiologist next Monday.

I'm 45 years old, stopped smoking in December, have been running 2 or 3 times a week since then, have lost about 10 kilos and am eating nicely.

The internet is very general about arrhythmia and palpitations, so does anyone have any experience of this kind of thing? Is it possible it can be stress? I don't feel stressed, but I have a lot of anger and frustration on a daily basis that I find hard to subdue, but usually get over it fairly quickly.

Family member had something similar (irregular heart beat). Saw a cardiologist in Cape Town, and it turned out to be a lack of protein. He had just started training quite a bit (running) after quitting nicotine, and it turned out he wasn't having enough protein in his diet. Since adjusting his protein intake it's as if nothing ever happened.

He's also now a vegan... so the protein doesn't have to be meat based.

No idea if this would be the same cause for you (doctors are usually a better source of info than IT forum members), but that was his situation.

I've tried to read up on it and sure, only the doc can tell me what's going on and I'll take it from there. But the myBB community are quite a wide and varied lot and replies like yours already gives me something (good) to think about.

I've wondered if it could be diet related and this health kick I've been on for a couple of months has been my most successful one ever. I've thought perhaps too much too soon with stopping the smokes, watching my diet, never had a drink for 6 weeks etc, but I feel pretty good now after going through some lethargic patches a month or so ago.

But yeah, thanks for the reply. I can't get a flight until Wednesday so have nothing to do in the meantime except worry about whether my heart is going to explode at 30,000 ft :D

Well in the mean time why not get some soy isolate or similar and have a little more protein? Can't hurt much in the short space of time you have until you see the doc.

Also, do let us know once you have seen the doc. May serve as useful info for someone else out there.

Thanks for the advice, but I won't be able to get it here. I buy all of my medicines from med lemon to zirtec to general anti-biotics in SA and bring themhere when I come. This place is pretty sparse for everything and anything I'm afraid.

But I just had a big steak for lunch though and will try and get some additional protein in over the next couple of days.

Dead men don't speak!

Just kidding, hope he is well.

Lol, still here :p

Was hooked up to 24 hour ECG yesterday/today, get results and feedback on Thursday and an ultra sound at the same time.

Only seen the nurse so far, see the cardiologist proper on Thursday and hopefully find out what's the deal then.

Ok, so had an ultrasound and was monitored on a treadmill by the cardiologist today. Good news is there is no sign of heart disease or any obvious nasty stuff. I've to go back for some blood tests after fasting for a while but the doctor says she is happy with what she has seen and she can try and regulate the beats through a couple of courses of medication. Just to wait until the blood test results for a conclusion.

So apparently my heart is irregular all of the time, even when I don't feel it, and it's beating mostly a double or triple beat. Over the course of 24 hours on Mon/Tues, it made 24,000 extra beats :wtf:

But she's going to start me off on an anti-acid type thing, even though I don't feel any symptoms, as it is not uncommon for this type of thing to be a reaction to years of smoking, drinking and eating the wrong stuff. If no change in a month, it's a tablet of some description for 2 months.

So looking good, but still got to look at the blood tests first before I get an all clear.

It took so long I though the worst! Just joking. Good luck for the rest.

Seeing the world is fixated on death and negative news does this mean you are dying? We could make a tv show out of this :D
