I have a really annoying set of decisions to try make and need some additional brains- what would you do in this scenario?

Circumstances:

My debt is almost gone after being indebted for a long time
My current flat I rent at 2k incl electricity (big bargain, cousins flat)
No car

Problems

1) Exams coming up in June - will need to get to Parow
2) Flat is small and no parking
3) A friend wants to move to CT and I said I'd help him - but current flat is too small for 2 people.

Possible solutions

Rent new flat n Buy car - Puts me straight back in debt - although I resolve friend and car issue
Rent car over exam period and stay in current flat- saves buttloads [Prob 4.5k additional saving per month]
Rent new flat and rent car over exam time period then eventually buy car cash.

Not a bad suggestion Bender - but will only purchase/rent a car- don't do the 2 wheel thing

Shop hard for a reasonable 2nd hand car. It'll probably cost less than the renting of a car at your age. Then also you have something to show for the money. Stay where you are till car paid for and has proven reliability.

Ariva has 3-5 year rental's. Car is in your name (or at least the license etc) and everything is included, insurance/services/tracker etc.

I know it's not extravagant or anything, but I have a Kia Picanto and it costs me R3303 a month all inclusive with no huge debt I had to undertake. At 45k I get a new set of tires. All services and maintenance is included, tracking included and insurance.

If a 3yr commitment is too much, I'd suggest public transport, Cape Town public transport isn't too bad.

Also, depending on how long your friend is planning to stay with you, you might want to stick it out at the flat you're in, even if it's a bit too small. A little discomfort to help out a buddy to get off his feet in the short term is better than having to pay more for a bigger place in the long term.

1) How far is the commute to parow? Take the train it's what I'd do.
2) The flat can probably fit another person if you're good with space. Just give him a deadline and stick to it.
3) Do not give up the rental situation until you're in a financially better place.

I think that he is situated in Table View area so no trains at all.

DrewChan, you could even get a bicycle cause the number of trips is so finite. Else you'd need to do BRT to town and then train to Parow :(

Where do you stay now? I'm asking because then you can take the train to Parow

edit: I see someone mentioned you're in Table View so ignore my question

We're talking about how many trips here? 5, 10? He can taxi to CBD and train from there. Will = way.

CBD is easy - myciti - I travel in everyday- train to Parow I'm more worried about - don't know the area.
Thinking about renting new place - then saving to get car - and just renting a vehicle for those specific days - will prob only set me back 1k.

Could prob fit buddy in bachelor :/ I'll think about it

I reckon this is the easiest and cheapest then. Train to Parow is super easy and no need to worry, just ask an attendant which platform to go to. Just get off at the Tygerberg station and then then UNISA is pretty close to there. 10 min walk max. Just have a look on Google Maps

Parow is very easy to get around. Is this with Unisa? The campus is only 5 minutes walk from the station. It's a sliiiiightly dodgy area but you should be ok.

I agree, lots of Nigerians in the immediate vicinity of the station, however once he reaches Shoprite park its much safer.

Its an option you should consider, Drew

OK, just re-thought my last post.

Its actually closer to UNISA if you get off at Tygerberg station and not Parow station. Its also a much safer walk :)
