Is 3G right for me?

Hi there

I need a bit of advice:

I recently (2 days ago) moved from Pretoria to Rivonia. In Pretoria I had ADSL 512 from Telkom. As I dont have a ADSL/telephone line in Rivonia yet, I decided to give 3G a go, so I borrowed a 3G datacard and ISA adapter and bought myself a Vodacom Pay-as-You-Go sim with a MYMEG 500 package on it.

Well, at first I was impressed with the speed and all, then the problems started. I keep on losing connection (while im browsing I will start getting 404 errors). Then I have to disconnect and reconnect. Then last night I got a "Sim not available" message from the dialer app. Had to unplug and replug the data card. Then this afternoon, I get home from work. No connection. Had to keep on reconnecting (3 times) just to get a ping going.

My problem is, I am on frequently on standby for work purposes. If they call me at 3 o'clock in the morning because the server has fallen over I need to be able to connect to it (or you the public wont be able to swipe your credit card to pay for midnight munchies).

I read the forums. I see that this has apparently started over the last six months. Is this a trend or just a glitch that will pass with time?

So considering all of this, would it perhaps be better to get myself some other service provider? I am not a fan of Telkom, but ive never had any problems like this with their service (except the time the lightning took the sub-station thingy)

Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards

PS: While I was typing the connection went out again. I am now on my old phones GPRS and even that is not up to scratch...

From my personal experience, as much as I hate to admit it, ADSL is far more stable and reliable than any wireless network:(

Sounds to me if you've got a faulty modem - might be a hardware problem and not the network, might even be the simcard.

Try another modem and see if you can reproduce the errors. I know E220 modems do not grow on trees, but maybe try a Vodashop?

What's you experience on Vodacom been like over the past week?

Orgasmic. :)

I love it & the fact that the Vodacom 3G tower is just across the road from my place. ;)

Sometimes I must hold my hand over my E220 modem, otherwise it's too fast. :p

*I've changed my DNS settings in Mobile Partner to the ones Syndyre gave me & it works lekka.

Here you go (credit to Syndyre) :

Ok, open Mobile Partner, click on Tools > Options > Profile Management.

Click 'Edit' and then 'Advanced' - you'll see there is a place to fill in your own DNS settings.

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Enjoy! :)

I have tried it with one of my old phones on GPRS as well and also had to try 3 times to get a connection going, so its not the modem. I also used my voice sim (different number) and that also had the problem so its not the sim.
