So I tried to apply for a 4mb line which was not a very pleasant experience, router was syncing at 4096/512 but speed test was showing dial up speeds! I'm quite far from the exchange but the green box about 500m from my house goes to the main exchange via fiber optic. So is it possible to get a 4mb speeds?

If your line sync @ 4096k down and 512k up there is nothing wrong with the line. The you should look @ your ISP. I live like 2km from the exchange and I still get full 4mbps service.

Just be aware that even though your router is syncing at 4096MB, doesn't mean you will be downloading at that speed. The average will be around 400Kbs for local and even less for international

My ISP is telkom:mad: my download speeds are 6 kb/s!!!

6kb/s ? That sounds impossible to me, I advise you to contact them immediately and report the problem.

Also what you can do is go to afrihost and buy a gb of bandwidth. It is very cheap and you can quickly test if the problem is your line or your ISP.

Good luck!

So a telkom techie phone me today,a guy that actually knew what he's talking about(yes they do exist) and apparently they were do a software upgrade for the new 10mb lines and that was causing a problem so hopefully by the end of this week it'll be sorted :)

If you get slow download speed but your line syncs @ 4096k then its not the line.

Your line won't sync @ 4096k when in actually fact the line quality is bad and only able to supply 384/512k or whatever. Telkom won't keep you on the 4096k sync profile if your line does not support it.

So the problem is some where else.

Ohh and its definitely not a line/exchange problem if you are indeed being upgraded to 10Mbit line/exchange.

I had problems with the connection from line to house at one point. Sometimes the phone wouldn't work but I'd still have ADSL. It has been fixed.

At one point last week I noticed I was getting horribly slow speeds. A test reported my line as a 1MB line. I checked my connections & found the jack in the wall was slightly loose. Problem solved.

It can be anything. You need to find out the actual distance that you are away from the exchange.

One of my clannies linked this calculator a while back, which calculates the maximum theorectical speed your line can run at using attenuation (as per hambone): http://fremnet.net/article/216/adsl-theoretical-speed-calculator.

You should be able to get the attenuation value from your router.

My line is capable of 10.8Mbps, but then I am only 2.1km away from the exchange with 29.8dB attenuation.

I have a Siemens gig762 modem and that only gives 1 attenuation upstream when i used a friends billion my downstream attenuation was higher.

Noise margin: 21.3 dB (upstream)
Line attenuation: 13.7 dB (upstream)

Which gives me

Attainable Rate (ADSL1) – kbit/s
8000
Attainable Rate (ADSL2) – kbit/s
22540
Distance to exchange (Meters)
992

I've got a cheap TP-Link ADSL2+ router (R450) with 1 LAN port that actually assigns addresses to all devices when I connect it to a switch ;)
