Is 600 kw/h a month normal

just scored a diesel generator last night for R5k from a mate of mine as he is upgrading his so that he can run EVERYTHING in his house including aircon :D

I should be able to run my entire house including the pool / fridge freezer with it ;)

only issue I have is it's quite noisy :( any idea as to making it quieter?

thought about putting a pipe over the exhaust and venting vertical instead of horizontal?
 
1500Kwh p/m - summer.
2500Kwh p/m - double in winter, no idea why since we use gas heaters.

Geysers. More heat loss, and the water being fed into them is a lot colder

Get your neighbours to also purchase one :)

All 3 houses joining my boundary have generators. So no complaints.

Good point. 1 double door side by side (fridge/freezer) in the kitchen, and a large fridge/freezer (top/bottom) in the bar. Should actually disconnect the bar one as we only use it from time to time.

Read on another thread here that the DSTV decoders draw the same whether on or in stand by. We are disconnected from DSTV and only activate for big sporting events - so the plug has been pulled on both HD decoders until we need them again.

Actually amazing what you can find to disconnect when you take notice.

thanks guys - think the best is a flexible coupling into a car silencer then that outlet up through a vertical pipe above the garage roof.

Well, yes some of the older models use about the same on standby c. 40W, but not every month --> FYI 40W = 1kWh per day! Also, it doesn't record very well when it's powered off :)

Just turning off the decoders will drop my bill by R100 odd a month. Don't need them now so they can stay off.

Sat measuring stuff in my home office today. Was quite surprising to see what I came up with.

Without aircon, it cost about R350 PM. With aircon I add around R250 to that.
I measured the kWh measured for each screen, PC, server, printer, etc..
Just by altering some habits, I reduced the overall amount by around R150 PM. For one room.

Going to measure other appliances in the house this weekend.

Once I am optimised with usage - time to go solar.

Can't remember the brand. Picked it up a few years ago. It's basically a socket with an LED display to show you usage. You plug it into a wall socket, and your gadgets into it.
Will send a pic in the AM.
