Is a flagship smartphone worthwhile?

e.g. Samsung Galaxy S-series, latest iPhone Pro/Pro Max. Roughly over R20,000.

What features push you towards a flagship? Camera? Overall performance? Longevity?

Yes got around 5 years of usage with my Samsung Galaxy Note and the iPhone will be similar if not more. My midrange or budget purchases usually only lasted a year to 2 years before battery issues or just slowness.

No.

In a world where the iPhone 17 exists and does all the things the Pro range makes no sense for the price different.

Diminishing returns throughout.

In previous years there was a larger distinction.

For most only going to make sense as a business expense.

Other: For me it comes down to the camera, performance, longevity and also the (potential future) resale value. Space and processing power are normally at the top of my list when comparing.

Is a Mercedes-Benz worthwhile?
Is a PlayStation pro worthwhile?
Is a Nvidia 5090 worthwhile?
is <insert top line> worthwhile?

One side you will get the those who can't have these items insulting them who have, then those who just move along and use what they need, and finally them who can afford it. I guess that is why we call it the crying have-nots?

flagship models lost the plot a long time ago

Samsung Galaxy A series is where it's at and even there is some major price gouging going on

new phones are only for when old phones break, only three features I specifically care about (all the rest will be decent enough 99% of the time):
- small form factor
- USB-C
- NFC

may my rugged Xcover5 last a long time yet!

They all pretty much do the same thing but for responsiveness the flagships seem to be much better.

Woring on my old phone + watch vs the S25 there is a noticeable difference.

Bought a Pixel 7a like 3 years ago and it's still going strong. Cost me 8.5k. Once I need a new phone, I will get the Pixel 9a or whatever their budget phone is at that time. Contract costs me 120 rand a month for like 30gb of data. These bloatware android phones are also a pass from me. Pixel is all I will use.

The iphone 17 is a flagship phone.

Yes, it never slows down or becomes laggy. Samsung S23 here.. 3 years later.
No need to upgrade yet, it's just as fast as day1 when I got it.

They good phones, let someone else buy them new and the R1000 a month for it, then when they upgrade to whatever the latest flagship phone is after 2 years, you can pick up that phone 2nd hand for R5000-R7000... and its still a solid phone for another 5 years.

You've not checked pricing lately? Also it's not 2 years it's 3 years now.
