Is a Surge protector needed for ADSL line?

I am new to DLS.. so wanna know of a surge protector is necessary for an ADSL line? Does Telkom supply it (!!!???)?

Yes...If you want telkoms warrenty thing. The are normally quite cheap but if you get the adsl modem from telkom they will supply it. If you get another brand the normally made one for it. That is an added cost of like R170.00

Trust me, it's worth it. Lost a Netgear DG834 to lightning during the holidays.

I had to buy a D-Link 504T or be without internet for two to four weeks. Yes, I'm addicted, hehe. Very happy with the D-Link btw, it's a bit cheaper than the Netgear and supports bridge mode.

Bottom line is I know have a R1K paperweight.

does anyone have positive/negiatve news about the modem?
I'm a very simple pc user so what difficulty level will it be for me to set it up??
