Is an Iburst modem a router?

I'm helping a guy out with getting his Iburst shared among a few computers. He has a modem which is black, and has three ports - power, USB and ethernet. It is currently connected to his (one) computer via USB.

In order to connect this modem up to his other computer as well as a wireless AP, would I just need to plug the ethernet port on the Iburst modem into the switch that the network runs on? Or is another router required?

Thanks!

It is a modem. But if you have a wireless access point you can cannect both it and the iBurst modem to a single PC and share that PC's connection wirelessly to other computers. You need to have two NICs and set up ICS (Internet connection sharing).

But you really can't beat running your network off a good router. If your guy's budget can stretch to it, that would be the recommended route.

Ah, ok, thanks for the info. I just realised earlier how very little I know about Iburst!

I'm trying to avoid using ICS since it obviously needs the host computer to be on at all times, which isn't ideal.

What sort of router is needed? Is there a special Iburst router? Thing is, the USB modem connects via a proprietary interface thing, can a normal router like a Netgear WGT624 connect through the Iburst modem okay?

I got the Netgear WGT624, changed MTU, and it worked! Thanks very much gatecrasher, who.is.michael and Ekhaatvensters!
