Is antivirus protection for Windows necessary?

I have not used an antivirus program on any of my Windows platforms for years. I used to use the free version of AVG, but that was a long tine ago, I do enable Windows Security and ensure security patches are up to date. But my niece asked me what she should do, and I am loathe to advise her, and later find that her security was compromised. She is running Windows 10. $40 a year for, say, McAfee, seems a lot of money to me, especially if it is no longer necessary,
 
Windows Defender built into Windows 10 and 11 would probably be considered by most people fine for home use and a better option than the free AV from AVG, Avast etc.

Whatever you do, do not install mcafee
 
There's two types of guys:

1. Just use Windows Defender and don't go to dodgy sites.
2. I can't cum unless I'm watching a 45 minute video of three women in dinosaur costumes twerking on a simp's face so yeah, visiting dodgy sites is a part of life for me and I need an antivirus.
 
If you're going to download a torrent and run the included exe you're probably screwed either way. Eh - been using windows defender and malwarebytes for ages and have never had an issue.

Do you need condoms?
Are you sticking your dick in weird places, then condoms will help.

Ive been using avast free since 2011, never had an issue and I'm a big torrenter.

If there is something that is super sketchy then I'll download it in a VM first and send it to virustotal.

It doesn't work like that. You could visit a normal site and be served compromised ads. It's not like the old days where you had to go to warez and porn sites to find viruses. Who doesn't remember astalavista.box.sk?
 
OneDay sometimes runs a 5 device, 1 year sub special for BitDefender for R99. I think these stack.
 
always download your dodgy shite and test it at work fist.. if it doesn't destroy their machines then bring it home

While Windows 10 is still in support, Defender and just plain vigilance is probably fine for the majority.

Rather invest the money in cloud backup and password manager so that if anything ever seems suspect then a format is a few stress-free clicks and a cup of coffee away.

Agree 100%

I have been using ESET for most of this century. I learned the hard way a long time ago. I rather pay and be protected than trusting windows for security.

Yes I know that I will never be fully protected as threats evolve every day.

Being vigilant is the other half of the equation. Don't do stuff that puts yourself in danger. Free premium software can cost you in other ways.
