Is Apple rotten to the core

Legally, if a product fails, your recourse is with the shop who sold it to you.
What recourse is there likely to be with a device that fails well outside of its warranty? Now maybe SA law is different but as far as I'm concerned once the products warranty ends so does the company's obligation to service it.

I don't know if you guys are aware of this but with Core, you take your Ipod to one of their stores (I went to the Sandton one) and tell them it's not working. They then offer to swap it out on the "battery exchange" program at a cost of course. The amount was R900 when I looked into it after my girlfriends mini got attacked by a concrete floor.

At the very least, they are willing to replace it to some extent even if it is excessively expensive. I hope this procedure is still available but wouldn't be surprised if it's not knowing Core.

Used the 3G 40GB from 2003 (bought on Ebay when none existed in SA) until I got the Creative Zen Vision. I had to self-replace the battery in my 3G after a year or so (of very heavy in car, on the town use) but it still works even now, except that the sound
quality of the Creative Zen Vision beats the iPod. I don't know what the current iPods sound like but Creative wins with the audio quality for my model.

The answer from Core is "it is out of the warranty period and they do not fix Nano's, so they only thing I must do is buy a new one."

But the really sad thing is I am about to do just that, buy another Ipod, because I cannot get anything that will be able to use my Bose.

I should wear a big sign that says "Dof for buying an Ipod".

All Dof people should have to wear signs that just say, "I'M DOF." That way you wouldn't rely on them, would you? You wouldn't ask them anything.

It would be like, "Excuse me... oops, never mind. Didn't see your sign."

iPods are nice but at present most MP3/video players out there are very good, as the co's had time to mature their technology. I changed from iPod to Creative (Zen Vision) and haven't looked back, the price
is the same, the audio quality better, the screen has 640by480 res vs
320by200, battery is detachable plus extended batteries are available, and the selection of video formats is superior. I can listen
to Audible books on it too. I like Macs (own a Mac Pro) but just because
something doesn't say Apple, it's not a bad product at all.

As for warranty issues, why should Apple replace an iPod if it's out
of warranty (except for the battery issues).

I sure hope you bought your iPod in the ME as they're much cheaper than in SA over there, they sell them at about 60-70% of the local cheapest price here.

"only thing I must do is buy a new one."

Well I have done it.

Core must be happy now, because I am a returning customer and have bought a new 8gb Nano. The one that broke was my Wife's, so I had no choice but to replace it :)

Actually, the new Nano is a nice bit of equipment, and Apple know how to make a marketable product, but Core's lack of service, still sucks.

As for warranty issues, why should Apple replace an iPod if it's out
of warranty (except for the battery issues).

I wasn't asking for a new one or a replacement, I was asking Core and Apple to provide the facilities to repair an Ipod. If my laptop breaks, and it is out of warranty, I take it to be repaired, and generally back to the company that sold it to me. They are classifying Ipods as throw away products. At least I know this now, and hopefully all those kids out there who save their pocket money and then spend it on an Ipod, know this too.

But I remember a few years ago, when you made a purchase of a Hewlett Packard calculator, and it stopped working, they used to replace it with either the same model, or the newer model, at anytime, for a small fee. Now that is what I call service.
