Is bigger better in the tablet PC world?

To sum up: Personal preference.

Steve Jobs says any old crap that he thinks will shift units at the time, he's a salesman. When Apple make a 7" tablet, he'll have some reason why they're suddenly magical and they did it first.

I agree with Jobs here - the iPad is just the right size.....if you want to use it for it's intended purpose. If you are only interested in reading electronic books then run along and get a kindle. But if you are wanting to do a multitude of things, web browsing, apps, spreadsheets etc then a 7" device will frustrate the living daylights out of me.....

If you're preoccupied with reading books like the author then a kindle or other ebook reader would be a better tool for the job.

On the other hand the narrow 16:9 display typically found on the 7" is ideal if your literary tastes lean more towards works such as "word of the day" toilet paper. :)
 
Well I guess it heavily depends if you allready have a device running Android or not, if you have one there probably no need to get another device with a slightly bigger screen just to lug around (7" instead of +/- 4") but getting a device with a 10" screen makes sence its the right size for ebooks (2 pages next to each other just like a real book) , movies, web browsing and gaming, to consider the upgrade...

As for price ,the iPad 1/2, Galaxy Tab, Motorola Xoom or even Dell Streak are way too expensive they all might be bleeding on the technology front but will kill your wallet, but the new A-pads or China pads are auctiolly a very good compromise as you can now get one with a 10" screen, 1ghz samsung processor, 512mb ram,GPS,WIFI, and Android 2.2 for $240 shipped ( R1950 ),but will have to sacrefice the capacitive touch screen with a resistance one, wich is not as bad as many would think and works better for drawing if you use the stylist...
 
But i always thought BIGGER is better in everything!! :D
 
i purposefully chose the 7" over 10" form factor (cost not being an issue)

the convenience it gives for me is top notch. can fit (barely) into my pockets. the fact i can hold it with one hand. 7" fits my media needs perfectly. of course i know it would be s**t for any long period of sustained typing. but that's not what i bought it for.

it is my preferred method of what i used to do with my laptop.

Above, you imply the Kindle only has a smaller screen available; however :

In fact, part of the reason I've delayed getting one is I can't decide which of the 2 screen sizes to get ?
That, and whether to get one of the colour-screen ones ?
 
This will probably go the same route as Netbooks. When Netbooks came out people it started at 7" with low specs and little memory as the price of the screens and memory become cheaper the sizes grew. Today you will seriously struggle to find a 7" Netbook with the most of them bordering laptop specs and sizes. I would say the market is not driven by size, its driven by price and what power I can get for that price.

Human tend to lie to themselves allot. There brain see the price of products we cant afford and start trying to convince ourselves that the one we can is better for some or other reason. This change as things moves more and more into our price brackets. Apple/Steve is well known for using this human trade in their advertizing as well. Example 1st Phones came out it was all about how you don't need multitasking or copy and paste, or when the Ipad came out Apple was all about why would you ever need a front facing camera, now look at Ipad 2.

In the same line I would say there will be 3 distinct brackets forming, Pocket able tablets, Books size, and Big screen (like say a 12" that you can attach to your fridge and stream TV to while you cook) and yes I know you can read books on a pocket sized tablet as well as watch movies, but its not the best fit for that purpose.
 
I find that 8" is the perfect size for a tablet. I import android tablets and own an iPad and have used many models. 7" is fine for video but too small for web browsing and ereading, unless it it's higher res like the galaxy tab. 10" is nice but I find it a bit too big for portability. The 8" at 4:3 screen ratio is perfect size.
