Is cellc that bad?

I was honestly hoping people say..."Naaaa... Cellc isn't that bad"

This is really Sad to see.... Now I really doubt its worth getting anything from cellc.

Like a lot of people are saying here, it has a lot to do with location. Get yourself a prepaid CellC sim and try it out for a few weeks in different places, that will give you the best idea of what to expect.

I should be in and around Jo'burg and Sandton... But I am sure at some point in 2 year I will be going out of the city so it becomes a problem...

It's ****ed in sandton

Network quality wise, I think it depends on the location you at - I would buy a cell c starter pack, load like R10 and give their network a spin.

I'm on the GigaNite 20 - I get excellent speeds (over 6Mbps) when I'm in PE, I get just over 1mbps when I'm in EL.

Reading several threads on Cell C around this forum, shows that Cell C customer support is shocking and they got network issues in several area's.

The problem it's sim or platform based.
Cell c prepaid is adequate and decent, poor data speed but a connection.
Data sim is fine, you can cruise at 200kbs.
Contract voice is pathetic, both voice and data, data is non existent. Voice quality is poor.
That's just my understanding.

Mine is contract, no issues with data but voice can sometimes be patchy although only when I am in my office, at home and around town voice is fine.

I am considering getting my contract canceled (pay in difference for phone) due to poor network, and porting back to VC.
I use GMaps (with traffic layer) quite a bit, and twice now I have had to pull over while GMaps tried to direct me and failing due to poor or no data connection.
I never had this with VC while there.

At home I have a fantastic connection. Better than my ADSL. Need it while driving around too though.

Why not just save some offline maps? I used it the other weekend on a trip to Arniston, worked a charm.

I do. Does not help the traffic aspect.
Point being that I never had to use offline maps when on VC. Now I have to ensure I have the maps cached for whatever place I may be visiting just in case Cell C lets me down.

I have had to change the way I do things because of a shoddy network provider. Been using GMaps for yonks and never had issues before.

Was on holiday recently. We made a stop and searched for a spot my wife wanted to visit. Poor network meant we had to pull out the wife's Garmin.

I'm very lucky here in the Table View / Blouberg area then. I use my phone in the car for music and I stream everything from my Plex server at home, so far it hasn't missed a beat although my data is already finished for the month :(

15c a meg hopefully won't hurt too much though :D

Well, let me give you my experience with MTN.

I am NOW living next to MTN HQ and registered last week. It took them 2 days to activate my S4 with MTN.
Worst is that I kept getting dropped call.
When I walked to their call center, they told me that it is because they didn't plan their radio signal properly, clashing with their MTN staffs usage. This mistake causes all the users nearby facing the same problem.

I was so pissed off and finally signed up for Cell C today for my kid. I am testing it out now and seems to be very smooth.
if you can read my posting correctly, that means Cell C is working much better than MTN as I failed to log on to the Internet when I used my MTN S4 tethering.

Not really. I used to get disconnects and no data throughput across the street from their head office in Sandton.

Fixed that problem by porting back to MTN.

What phone are you using? I'm in Tableview 90% of the time and I simply can't make a call. It's fine at bayside itself but as soon as you start heading up blaauwberg road it starts to deteriorate.

If you are having good reception then I must assume that it's my iPhone.

I used to be very happy with cell c, not anymore. No connection at night at all.

Not gonna help when you are stuck with a 2 year contract.

Cell C used to work very well at my home until about the end of last year. I now have to use an 8ta sim on my 3G router for data on my phone while at home.

Been with Cell C since 2009 - no problems with calls or data. The problems peopel experience appear to be area based

I'd suggest you get that prepaid CellC sim card for R2 and load it with some airtime and data and try it out in your area.

Problem is some of us not permanently based in one area. If you move around a bit - you're screwed.

I recently had to meet a client out on the west rand at Dros. I got there a bit early so tried to message him to tell him I was waiting outside. WhatsApp could not send (full strength 3G connection). So I tried to SMS. Would not send. So I tried to call. Garbled noise on answer.

At home I have a very good connection data wise. Making or receiving calls is dodgy though. My wife actually asked me to go back to Vodacom this AM cause half the time she tries to call me it drops before connecting. She has to call a few times sometimes before getting through. Then she moans about the voice quality. Sigh... Same phone as before when with Vodacom.

I think I am going to pull out of this contract and port back to the devil - VC. Surely they can't penalise me if they are not providing a decent and stable service? Will just pay in the difference for the phone.

Then the gapps issue. Again - moving around.

Galaxy S2. I can't say that I remember having issues making calls.
