Is Chevrolet Captiva reliable

Apart from the parts issue I love driving the thing, in fact as far as I'm concerned it's a nicer drive than any of the other SUVs we test drove.

How has your fuel consumption been on your diesel? I am now on my 4th tank since buying it in May this year. Basically drive a tank per month, so not really driving very far. Also, never been driving more than 20% of it on highway/freeway. The tank lasts almost exactly about 650 - 680km for me every time. I throw in when it says 50km's to go, then the trip meter will be at 600 to 630km's. So that translates to just under 10km/litre (65l tank), which is not cheap by any means, but also not rediculously high for a 2tonne vehicle. I've never driven a diesel before, and expected the fuel consumption to be a bit lower, but at least it is not far off from my previous car so I don't really feel the difference. I will wait and see how it does on the long road. As I said, most of my driving is stop and go or short trips of 5 to 10km.

My bendix went on my recently purchased 2009 2.0l diesel and trying to get a replacement starter motor elicited a 4-6 week wait from Chevrolet and there was no chance whatsoever of just sourcing a replacement bendix. In the end the dealer who I purchased the car from managed to find a replacement bendix from the manufacturer in Korea but I've got to wait 1-2 weeks even for that (it's currently stuck in customs).

Just for my own edification is a failing bendix a possible indication of a bigger problem that might haunt me down the line?

No it isnt, the bendix can go on any car and when the starter is replaced or repaired then it doesnt give hassles again.
Its just an unlucky thing, nothing suspect about it.

Stop-go commuting on short journeys is a consumption killer. My 1.6 diesel, which happily returns figures in the mid to high 5s per 100km on the open road, equally happily guzzles almost 9l/100km in town if I'm not careful. We moved recently, but that behaviour was compounded until recently by us staying in a bit of a valley - literally every trip started with an uphill journey, and on short stop-start trips you never make up the deficit.

Your highway consumption will be vastly different.

Im still not sure about the whole diesel thing, someone posted on here recently about the 4l fortuna which had very similar consumption to the 3d fortuna.
A guy from my office bought his wife a tata indica diesl(*** car I know) and when he went on a long trip he took that instead of his double cab bakkie expecting to get amazing fuel economy and found it was worse than her old 1.6 polo had been.

I know there are some super frugal diesel sedans but it doesnt look like all of them are that way.
 
I am looking at buying this exact vehicle. I was looking at models between 2007-2009 as they fit in my price bracket. One thing that I have read over and over again is that the 2.0LTZ is a no no. Very prone to blowing head gaskets and this is a very common issue. Just google it.
So my only option is the 2.4lt. My wife really wants a 7 seater.

That's the diesel I got :o

When I saw the consumption figures my mate gets on his 2.4l petrol (15l/100km) I knew that wasn't the car for me though.

I am tempted to get one but at the right price.

Are there any markings/labels on the starter? These things are usually made by third party manufacturers and supplied to the various car manufacturers so it's pretty common to find a starter that's common to several models/brands but not always the case so it might be possible to swap from something else. Best to ask a old school auto electrician, the type that still strip starters & alternators to fix them.

The guy the dealer has working on it is definitely an old school auto electrician. :) He's tried repairing it twice but they didn't stick.

Well, after a lot of searching, it looks like I am going to settle form 2010 captiva 2.0l diesel. 73000km with balance of 5 year / 150000km warranty. One owner with fsh. Full house with leather AWD and sunroof. Paying R210000. 101 point check with G2 master cars. If the finance goes through I could be an owner.
 
Reliable? Perhaps. Thirsty most certainly. My cousin had one, emphasis on the had. Its a juice monster.

The fuel economy isn't too bad in my books.

Not having too much luck with the reliability side mind you
