Is Do2 + Free router still available?

I recall reading on MyBB that the free router offer no longer apply to the Do1 option. Is it still available with Do2?

If so, what router do you get? What sort of functionality does it offer? I'd actually prefer a router without wi-fi. What is its worth? i.e. what would it cost to buy the exact same router.
 
It is only available if you sign on for a 24 month contract.

In the current ADSL ISP market it is NOT advisable to sign any term contracts.

Rather buy a router and then select an ISP.
 
I'm very happy with the router.

Signed the 24mth contract to subsidise the modem and happy with my decision. Then again I need to get a 2nd DSL line for my wifes business and we might go uncapped for that and then use my account as failover - Telkom has surprisingly been the most reliable ISP at our office the last few months as we use it for fail-over too.


EDIT: If you took the modem over 24mths on your Telkom account you would pay in R50. Take that off the ADSL DO2 offering and then compare prices.
 
I got my marconi on a 24 month contract and was told back then that taking a contact is not advisable cause Neotel will soon offer better deals, now 4 years later and Telkom still offer the best deal for a low budget consumer and I believe they will always do so in the foreseeable future. Show me another ISP that will allow you to move 25GB (5 + 20) of data for R117 and give a modem as well. Yes, I make full use of the local bandwidth, in fact I consider my Do1 account as 10GB local plus 1GB free international. However 25GB (New Do2) is more than what I'lll probably use, unless they bump the 384 speeds, so I'm considering if going with Do2 is worth it for the router's sake or if I should stick to Do1. Very disappointed that Do1 didn't get an upgrade considering that recently it was downgraded from 11.5GB to 11GB.

Thanks cbrunsdonza, thats the sort of information I'm looking for. There isn't perhaps an online manual available for the telkom router. I'm interested to know if it does anything more than the marconi, things like QoS, trafic prioritizing, etc. Also, do you perhaps know what the cash price for the router would be.

There is no manual, but it was way better than my Marconi. Runs BusyBox so you can telnet into the device and even setup routing if you want to run multiple accounts. I've not played with the QoS so no comment on that. But its a great basic router and very reliable.

Personally I thing the lack of documentation is to allow the more expensive products to be sold.

The cash price for the router is R999 !
 
Pay about R100 more per month, move 30gb or more data (without having to live with the pain and craziness of local only access) and not have to sign a ridiculous 24 month contract. If you buy a decent branded router with way more features and better quality than the Marconi crap for about R800, over 24 months that's only about R35 per month AND if you're unhappy with the service you're getting OR find a better deal, you can cancel and move in a month without having to buy out the contract.

Still don't understand why people sign these contracts.
 
But the problem with uncapped is its unreliable. Also you need to use more than 10GB each month to make it worth your while.

For me personally I'm ticking to Telkom as I need a reliable connection (I work from home most evenings on remote servers).
 
Capped is generally more reliable, better speed and I make full use of the local bandwidth, so to me Do2 will be 25 available Gigs. It is very unlikely that I'll need more than that, so for me to pay R100 extra each month for a congested, more down than up SEACOM uncap account would be madness. Besides, since Telkom squeeze all they can get out of us, why not squeeze all we can get out of them too, by making use of the free router offer.

I'll head out to our Telkom shop on Monday. I see on the telkom website they have a couple of routers for R959, can one choose which modem you want or must you just take what they give. I like the Billion 400G.

I was going to take the Billion but they had no stock and was doubting the duoPlus 300W I took on my way home till I plugged it in.

I'm so happy with it that I'm getting a 2nd one for my wifes small business in 2mths time (the delay is my side not Telkoms) when we get ADSL for her.

You can run more than one account on it, which is great for me as I've got a backup Axxess account and can easily switch between them now without having to jump through hoops.

If you allow your inner geek to indulge itself, then you can even configure routing rules on the modem via Telnet to use certain accounts for specific IPs or even have dedicated accounts per PC. This is great for me if I want to download a couple of GB locally using my netbook, but still want to work on our Amazon servers with my other PC. Or when guests arrive and they must bring their own bandwidth.

You do know that the 20 free gigs give you absolutely no international access right? So basically you'll need to have another ISP for international once you're on local-only with Telkom and either switch between them or split your traffic.
 
Yes, I do know what local is. Right now I'm using an IS local account dialed by my router. That I use most of the time, then I only let my PC dial my international prepaid account when I need to browse international sites and with routing in place to split the traffic. My 1GB prepaid international last me 3 to 4 months.

Thanks cdrunsdonza for all the info and advice. I'm going to try to get the Billion, but if they too are out of stock, I'll go for the Duo+.
 
If they don't have the Billion at the Uitenhage shop, ask them to phone around the other PE shops...

i bought a planet wifi router for R380 ^^

and stuffed telkom with their R69 per gig crap


Using Afrihost 29rand per unshaped gig for gaming and axxess 19rand per gig for downloading (it don't work too stable with gaming)

Where is Telkom R69 per Gig?????? We are not talking about TopUp on this thread.

Also, on doBroadband2 I'm paying R258 for 5Gigs of International including my 385 Line - this comes to R106 for my bandwidth and translates to R21.20 per GB. I've also found that Telkom is so reliable that I do not need "unshapped" for my gaming.

Ok, so on Monday I got my Free Billion router and signed the papers. Now I know this is a major error on my part, but I did not read all the pages and pages that I signed. So today a techi phoned me and say that he got an order for me for a new line. Oops, that is not what I had in mind. Is the free router offer only for a new line or is it for any Do 2 contract. I told the techi, no, I didn't order a new line, I only upgraded to Do2 and he said its ok and he won't come out then.

So what is up with that. Hope they not going to charge me now for a new line and installation and all that, cause then the free router won't be so free. cbrunsdonza, when you got the free router, was that coupled with a new line install?.

/me very worried now.

I didn't get an order number. Just went to the shop, signed and got the router and my AllAccess 5GB account details. There is an account number, TINxxxxxxx. Don't know if that is of any use.
