I exist only in my own mind ...
I'm downloading a knoppix iso from ftp.is.co.za and it's running at 6MB/s on a dsl 384 connect. I'm not capped (capping shouldn't affect anyway) and the hughest speed so far is 11.64, also slower than I would expect.

otherwise response seems pretty normal.

IS traffic shape thier FTP downloads to people who are not thier customers.
I also get around 12k per second.

We're going to see more and more of this type of strategy as broadband becomes more prevalent, because traffic is so damn expensive in this country - thanks to Telkom once again !

I just tried ftp.sun.ac.za - I used to be able to get decent speeds there, but now it's about 4k per second max - I would imagine they are also traffic shaping.

About the only ftp site worth connecting to is Saix - but they don't have the knoppix your looking for.

Anyway, I presume you've been capped and wan't to snag knoppix today - at 11.64 you'll get it down by this evening. At 12k per second your looking at around 13 to 14 hours.

I downloaded 3 linux cd's from UP's website at 52kb/s on my 384k line, all over ftp. Shaped? Internationally maybe, not so sure about local.
