Is getting a NAS worth it in 2024?

Excluding using as a Plex server or running a business, do you find having a NAS useful in your household? I'm struggling to find the practical benefits over cloud storage (e.g Google photos,drive etc.) outside cost and privacy.

I use it as a media box where I load my video files to stream to the house hold devices.

NAS all the way. Cloud storage is becoming too expensive. Google one goes from R530 for 200gb to R1850 for 2TB. I'd rather selfprovision and buy an extra harddrive or two every year for the same cost. We are at our 200GB limit for the family, and there is no way that we are upgrading to 2TB. Busy shifting all of that to Synology NAS

I very much have a NAS in my house for when the internet dies or goes away, so the Cloud isn't part of the same conversation at all.

Excluding plex? Not really. By the time it ready to hit the nas or get uploaded to the cloud I’m essentially done with it.

NAS for me. I use it for :

• Plex ( don't we all )
• Home Assistant Docker containers which home automate and feed a household dashboard
• Backup of two PC's and a Mac. So first to local and then to two cloud accounts so work and business stay separate
• Phones and iPad photo drop to shared folder
• Project backups ( code and files )
• General storage ( photos, music etc. )

When I get around to adding some cameras to the house, it will act as an NVR as well

Just curious. I randomly googled the pricing and you seem be paying far more than they advertise. Where's the delta ?

Synology. Yes. Best cloud storage you can get.

No. All / real debrid takes care of needing Plex for just R60 p/m. I also have lifetime 10TB pcloud, 10TB icedrive, 1TB Koofr, 2TB Filen and 50gig Mega to deal with any other storage requirements.

Monthly vs yearly pricing. More fair to compare the yearly pricing if you want to compare it to buying a HDD

My work stuff is all on my iCloud between my devices, I have 1TB there.
For personal files, videos, archives etc and stuff i don't want to lose I have a 2TB Dropbox.

IF you're really pushing hard data like >2TB and you need it often a NAS is good but i guess.
