Hi guys, long time lurker here, whenever I've had a problem, i've been able to come here and find a solution, but received a rather intriguing email today, was wondering if anyone here could share some light on it. Heres a copy of the mail:

IS ( Internet solutions ) has informed us that you are downloading Illegal software link to account: [email protected]
Please note that Illegal software will not be tolerated on the IS network.

If you could please refrain from using BitTorrent again. Reason being that (IS) has your ip address and they will block you as well as black list you.

Please see our Acceptable User Policy below:
http://www.webafrica.co.za/docs/aup.html

Once this matter has been resolved , could you please give us feedback on the situation.

Please find contents below:

Log follows:

Thank you.

Now firstly, should I worry about this? And secondly, is it legal for them to go through my files and see everything i'm doing?

Thanks in Advance

search, you'll find allot of usefull information

Dont worry though

except the s.w.a.t first thing tomorrow morning...

they're not going through your files, you machine announces itself when downloading Torrents and there are sites on the Net checking which IPs are seeding and then reporting them to their ISPs.

thats the short version. just search this forum and you'll find a lot more on it.

lol sigh.. was probably pron and too ashame of it :P

You got that mail because you probably don't had an upto date ipfilter.dat file, and your encryption was off or not set on 'forced'

i thought encryption doesnt matter? their client is "pretending" to be a torrent download - so its getting the valid list of peers - and busting those peers. The data is encrypted, but the name of the torrent and the peers are not.

/vote can this be the file in question

90210.S02E04.HDTV.XviD-LOL.avi.torrent

dude search the forum, meny people have had this email. apparently it harmless since we are in the R of SA, but if it makes you sleep better at night use privet trackers or Peer Guardian

What happened here is as follows:

A public tracker was almost most certainly involved (this rarely happens on intl private trackers)
Sony/Warner Bro's or whoever, sees you are downloading this torrent.
They track down who owns the IP address. In this case it's IS.
They email IS and gives them a legal notice.
IS has to comply, and forwards the email to the ISP that leased the IP, in your case, WA.
WA has to comply with the initial email, so they send it to you.

Now neither WA or IS will do anything unless this has happened a few times - bandwidth you spend gives them money, so they're not complaining.

Switch to SAIX. I've been with TI since... forever and never once received an email. Also, that email isn't very scary, I wouldn't worry!

Or, depending on the magnitude of your balls, send a scathing reply a la ThePirateBay:)
